This is the story of puerto rico’s apagón, or “super blackout,” the longest and largest major power outage in modern u.s. history. without electricity, there is no reliable source of clean water. school is out, indefinitely. health care is fraught. small businesses are faltering. the tasks of daily life are both exhausting and dangerous. there is nothing to do but wait, and no one can say when the lights will come back on.

This is a story of giving back the names to individuals that are homeless, often unknown and forgotten. many people just pass by when seeing an individual that is homeless on the street, paying no attention to the person - whether on purpose or subconsciously. for many, this person - a person without a name to them - is a phantom unable to love, fight for life or make decisions. but lilya, roma, esma, raisa, and zhenya loved, fought, and suffered. they were human beings. and so we must remember them.

In 2016, time began telling the story of newborn baby heln and her family, who are syrian refugees seeking asylum in europe. heln’s mother taimaa learned she was pregnant soon after fleeing syria, the baby is born in greece and spends her first few months inside a tent in a refugee camp, where heat and water are in limited supply. but the hardest part is the waiting, waiting to hear which country in europe will grant the young family asylum and a chance to find a safe home. taimaa tells of the frustrations of waiting for asylum, the quiet moments of new motherhood, and the lonely struggle to fit in in a new land.
