"just off the shore of the white nile, near one of juba’s most popular expat bars, sits a rusted, half-sunken ferry. it’s iconic. ask any foreigner who’s visited the city, and chances are they’ll know exactly what you’re talking about. but few people seem to have any idea how the boat got there. was it shot down by an rpg during the sudanese civil war? was it sunk by sabotage?"

For female journos, physical, sexual, and online abuse is a part of daily work life. these are direct attacks on freedom of press with the intent to silence women's voices. we say enough is enough.

Today, we remember 2002 #courage winner, anna politkovskaya, who investigated rapes, beatings, & murders committed by the russian military and endured arrest and death threats as a result. in 2006 politkovskaya was killed. she would have been 60 today. .

There's still more work to be done. this year alone we have received over 40 requests for assistance from female journalists, and every day we hear more stories of the unique challenges that they face around the world. support #journosincrisis.

"we met these dapper gentlemen in a protection of civilians site in south sudan. i took a portrait of them overlooking the camp in the back, where they have lived for years now. finding moments like this, in the context of conflict and crisis, is always necessary to me. it reminds me that amidst displacement and hardship, life goes on for the people we turn our lens to." .

'i have over 15 hours of mushroom tape from this trip... i’d normally spend a couple of hours reporting a quirky food story like this. i’d get a handful of voices, a quote from an expert and whip it all together for a quick hit. but this past week, i’ve had the time to ask dozens of people why oyster mushrooms are popping up all over rwanda and what it means.' .

'one of the best items i packed for rwanda (and i definitely overpacked in terms of equipment) was the simplest: an instant camera.' .

Be a lifeline for #journosincrisis.
there are few fields where workers routinely face harassment, physical and online attacks, arrests, lawsuits, eviction, equipment theft and more – all simply for doing their jobs. and with growing threats against press freedom, female journalists often feel the brunt of these attacks. consider donating so together we can be a lifeline. link in bio.
