The painted face of a man from the highlands of papua new guinea looks at my camera and his eyes tell me: i am not “the others”, i am just like you. that’s what i want to say with my photographs: even though we look different, we are all the same. la cara pintada de un hombre del altiplano de papúa nueva guinea mira a la cámara y sus ojos me dicen: no soy “los otros” soy igual que tú”. eso es lo que quiero que mis fotografías digan : aunque parezcamos diferentes, todos somos iguales. * * #defenddiversity #blue #color #diversidade #tribe

What experiences have impacted your life? today i am reflecting on the kinds of experiences that have changed my life. for some of us, they are the rites of passage that come with being a human: giving birth, weddings, the departure of loved ones. for me, being in the water at sunset, surrounded by silky sharks and not feeling an ounce of fear, has redefined my relationship with the ocean. in jardines de la reina, cuba i jumped in the water to photograph these majestic animals, i felt the thrill of their presence, and i felt alive, humbled and immensely happy to be a part of the vast oceanic community for a few precious minutes. these are the moments that drive me to protect our oceans and coastal communities. #turningthetide with @sea_legacy with @paulnicklen, @andy_mann, and @mdalio #nature

Traveling by dog sled across the frozen sea ice highways of northern greenland is one of those experiences that will always stay with me. if you close your eyes, all you hear is the swoosh of the wind and the conversation between the dogs and the musher. it is like riding on a magic carpet. #turningthetide with @natgeopristineseas @enricsala @paulnicklen and @sea_legacy

Children are some of my favourite subjects to photograph. young and full of promise they remind me of the need to work faster, more urgently to leave a better planet for the next generation. this girl from the merino tribe of central madagascar was super shy and gave me the faintest of smiles. it never gets old to spend time with people that still have a connection to the land! #turningthetide with @sea_legacy

Today we have reason to celebrate. the canadian government just announced more than $12 million in new funding for research aimed at protecting b.c.'s endangered southern resident killer whales. their numbers have been declining, from 89 whales in 2000 to a mere 76 today. their future is uncertain as the lower coast of bc continues to industrialize. projects like the proposed expansion of the kinder morgan pipeline will increase noise and ship traffic and the overfishing of foundation fish, like herring, has had an impact on salmon populations on which marine life, including orcas depend. #turningthetide with sea_legacy @coextinctionfilm

What does a healthy ocean look like to you? there is a common misconception that protecting our oceans, keeping them healthy and vibrant, means destroying our economy; that it's either, or. in reality, what we are working towards is showing the world that acknowledging the vitality and of our seas isn't about sacrificing economy, but rather, it's about creating a new paradigm for what drives our economy. ⠀ my partner, @paulnicklen and i are at the globe series in vancouver. this year’s theme is "disrupting business as usual, with a sub-theme of "the state of our oceans.” i am honored to be here and speaking on my vision on behalf of @sea_legacy and how we can protect it for both our planet’s health and a sustainable future. #turningthetide

An american crocodile says “hello” to me in the garden of the queens, cuba. this crocodile is one of the many predators that inhabit cuba’s mangrove forests. his nonaggressive behavior and seeing many of these predators in this area is an indication of a healthy and abundant ecosystem. today, i am talking at the loggerhead marine life centre in west palm beach, florida to help share my experiences in the field and conservation so that we can continue to protect all our tropical waters for generations to come. #turningthetide with @sea_legacy #crocodile #tropics #nature #lecturetour

This past new year’s day i was able to visit a maasai village outside of masai mara national reserve and met these two beautiful girls peering out the door of their home. maasai women are tasked with building the inkajijik, the maasai word for home, for their family. their houses are usually loaf-shaped and made from mud, sticks, grass, and cow dung and have to be rebuilt every eight months. one day, these girls will learn how to build their own homes from their mothers and take their rightful place in the community. leadership comes from knowing where and who you belong with and girls who are raised in the certainty of their culture, like these maasai girls, often go on to become great matriarchs. it is worth investing in making sure girls have the tools to become leaders. #turningthetide with @sea_legacy with @paulnicklen @ericnixonphoto @liannanixon

I am getting ready to speak to my friends and neighbours in nanoose bay about the magical spot we live in. the salish sea is a jewel of marine resources where life thrives in the rich waters of the pacific. we are lucky to call this place “home”. a pink anemone holds on to a rock while kelp fronds sway in the currents of the salish sea. #turningthetide with @sea_legacy and @pacificwild

The silhouettes of baobabs stand like skeletal ghosts in the valley of the baobabs. of the nine species of baobabs, six are native to madagascar, where i made this photograph, while two are native to mainland africa and the arabian peninsula, and one is native to australia. these are truly extraordinary trees that have evolved adaptations over thousands of years to survive in some of the harshest environments on the planet. #beauty #blackandwhite #photography #trees #nature #love

Like so many young indigenous people around the world, @takaiya_blaney has struggled with identity, frustration and anger at the atrocities committed against her people and against the land and the water. she, however, has made her own contract with earth and she uses her voice and her talent to speak for her people, the tla’amin first nation. in fact, she is the youngest person ever to speak at the united nations forum for indigenous people, where she inspired the world with her passion and determination. we each have an opportunity to have that conversation with ourselves many times throughout the day. so, when the moment comes for each of us to ask ourselves: is this a good choice? is this good for the planet? am i thinking about others, the future generations, or am i just thinking about myself? let the answer be informed by your values, let it be born out of a lifelong conversation with your own heart that knows what’s good for the earth is also good for us. with @takaiya_blaney @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #dreambigprincess #beauty #courage #love #instagood #womensinternationalday #girlpower

Happy international women’s day!! i loved how sassy and confident these three little vezo fisherwomen were when i met them on the beaches of madagascar. they told me that in the morning they go to school and in the afternoon, they help their mother catch fish for their family. they were smart and entrepreneurial and not afraid to have a full conversation with me. girls, if given the opportunity can grow up to become compassionate leaders, businesswomen, innovators, and mothers. i believe that in order to change the world, every person in the room needs to be empowered to participate in business, technology, and non profit solutions and a tidal wave is coming to make sure this is true in every corner of earth. support girls (and boys) and they will become the secret sauce to improve the lives of everyone on this planet. #turningthetide with @sea_legacy #internationalwomensday #girlpower #love #iwd2018 #timesup @natgeo creative #motherhood @natgeo @thephotosociety @emmawatson

When i set out to be a photographer, i didn’t know that the real reward would be the endless hours i have spent sitting quietly in the company of animals. in 2015, i spent new year's on the island of steeple jason where hundreds of thousands of black-browed albatross raise their chicks every year. as i sat quietly watching these dedicated parents take turns to feed and keep their baby warm, i could completely relate as i too would do anything to keep my children happy and safe. nature is amazing and there is so much to learn from it. with @johnmittermeier @mickmitty and @jittermeier #turningthetide with @sea_legacy and @paulnicklen #onassignment  for @natgeo

A first nations warrior from the namgis people, crouches during a dance to protect himself from the spirits of the forest native people have survived 500 years of atrocity on this continent with the help of prayers, ceremony, and community. the coastal first nations of british columbia remain steady in their promise to never give up on their cultural and spiritual relationship with the land and water. it is perhaps for this reason that despite the continuing war against their way of life, there is love, happiness and a deep spirituality in their communities. #turningthetide with @sea_legacy. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #tradition #culture #dance #beauty #pride #blackandwhite

Photo by @stephsinclairpix // my talented friend, stephanie sinclair worked on a story for @natgeo that changed her life. she now wants to change the lives of her young subjects and she has recruited some of the best female photographers of our generation to help. we all have donated artwork to raise funds for this effort. tonight, i am asking you to go to the link in my bio to support young women forced to marry while they were still children. ya kaka (centre), 19, was abducted by boko haram with two of her sisters in 2014. “after invading bama, the boko haram insurgents came to my house, one of them saw me and said, ‘i want to marry you.’ i said i will not marry you. my parents will not give me to you. then he said, ‘o.k., that is easy. let me k**l them, so that you will now be the one to decide.’ we got married in the sambisa forest. three months later, he came to tell me that he wanted to go attack a community. my husband was killed in that attack. i was pregnant by that point. supported by too young to wed, she now attends ramat polytechnic in maiduguri. #follow these female photographers to see how they are helping end underage marriage: @stephsinclairpix @maggiesteeber @jodicobbphoto @erikalarsen888 @lynseyaddario @andreabruce @photospice @deannefitzmaurice @habjouqa @ljohnphoto @kirstenluce nluce @katieorlinksy @newshatavakolian @amytoensing @stufankjian @amivitale @victoriawill @dzalcman @tasneemalsultan #tooyoungtowed #girls #girlseducation #endchildmarriage #letgirlslearn #girlpower #bringbackallourgirls

On this #worldwildlifeday, i want to celebrate the beauty of a lioness’s love. she tends to her two young cubs and patiently endures their affections. like this lioness cares for her cubs, we must tenderly care for our wildlife and ecosystems. we all share this beautiful planet, and without love and care, we will lose the most spectacular parts of our earth. we may lose our importantly innate connection with nature. please follow me and @sea_legacy as we are #turningthetide to break down the walls of apathy and be the voice for our incredible wildlife. #nature #lion #beautiful

Video by @liannanixon, my new assistant and photo mentee and an intern at @sea_legacy . when we were hiking rwanda’s mountainous landscape to see gorillas, a group of kids welcomed us to their family farms and sang a song about locals being guardians of the gorillas. the locals have taken the responsibility to protect the gorillas and teach their children the importance of preserving these wonderful animals and ecosystem. it is incredible to witness a cultural narrative that emphasizes conservation and harmony with their neighboring wildlife. i hope that one day we live in a world where all people will take the initiative to protect their local wildlife and sing and dance about conservation prosperity! #turningthetide #women #mentor #kids #singing #dancing
