anybody else missing the warm, green, and lush summer days in colorado yet? while i love shooting the raw, cold, and rugged winter landscapes (believe me i do love it), i miss the ability to sit and relax while watching the scene unfold in front of me without partially freezing to death🥶. that being said, we’ve got at least 4 months of winter left!!! wooohoo!!

I’ve been wanting to photograph wind turbines for quite some time now; really ever since i discovered the work of nick page. his palouse turbine photos were the true inspiration behind my desire to visit these mechanical giants. last saturday morning, @lukewagnerphoto and i ventured out to east colorado to do just this. we were so lucky to find this amazing composition right off the side of the road. the way the field had been plowed created these amazing leading lines, and the snow provided such amazing contrast. the conditions were perfect. we didn’t want to walk into the field too far, therefore luke and i ended up tripod to tripod in order to take advantage of the best composition. i always find it so fascinating to see the different directions two photographers take their edits even with identical compositions!
a little bit about the experience: these 2 megawatt turbines stand 400 feet tall, and the sound of the enormous blades rotating above our heads was unreal!! we didn’t catch as much color as we’d hoped, but the soft pastel tones worked perfectly in the end. also, i don’t think my hands have been as cold as they were that morning in a long, long time. that wind was brutal, but after all, we were at a “wind” farm.

If you haven’t already done so, make sure you join @davidg__photography and i over at @earthgridz 🌏!! it’s our new account that adopts a unique style of featuring great photographers from all over the globe! 📸 as for the photo above, you are looking at the most insane sunrise i have ever witnessed when it comes to pure burn-factor. what you see is quite literally how it looked in person. this photograph was taken on thanksgiving morning at sprague lake, with the great company of @abbygomer! i had initially planned to find a composition facing the divide (west) using the frozen lake as my foreground. but like many times before, the action started happening behind me. luckily, abby was a little more compositionally open minded and shouted “get over here ben! it’s so red!”. i quickly packed up my gear and sprinted around to the other section of the lake, where the backdrop facing east showcases three perfectly placed mountains. i frantically ran (carefully) around the ice looking for some foreground interest until i found this gnarly crack, and that brings us to the photo seen above.

ok, now for the photo above: this shot was taken along the way to medicine bow national forest in wyoming. as we were driving, this scene of three trees alone in a field jumped out at me and instantly reminded me of a microsoft desktop saver haha. i had to capture it! boy do i miss the greens of summer!
🍁happy thanksgiving!!🍁.

How many possible compositions can i muster out of horsetooth reservoir? apparently enough to last me a lifetime. last friday evening i invited any local photographers to join me for a ht sunset session via an instagram story (you may remember seeing this), and @wmorleyphotography was able to pull through. we met near the north damn, and picked a location across the road upon a small rock ledge. i decided this evening to incorporate some light trails from passing vehicles to highlight the road, ultimately emphasizing my leading line. in addition to having a good number of vehicles to work with, we were also treated to a decent sunset. this shot is a combination of exposure blending and stacking. the light trails were captured in a series of five shots taken after the sun had set, and these were blended together to fill out the trails. the sky frame was taken during the setting of the sun and was blended in post. ❗️learn how i process my photos! the link is in my bio❗️

Last weekend i ventured up to the bear lake area of rmnp for some solo-sunrise action. however, no matter how many of you may think i always get the best light, this sunrise was a bust haha. but don’t ever let that deter you from seeking out alternative compositions to shoot! many times when the light does not materialize, i enjoy looking for more intimate compositions, typically using a larger focal length to frame the shot. my initial plan was to shoot long’s from a lookout between nymph and dream lake, but instead i scrambled up the mountain side behind me leading to some visibility of hallett peak. i always enjoy shooting an iconic location in a way that hasn’t ever been done before, at least one i’ve never seen before! ❗️learn how i process my photos! the link is in my bio❗️

This photo was taken during fall this year at the beautiful twin lakes area. this was our first morning at the lake during a three day trip. the night before @abbygomer and i had arrived in the dark, therefore we hadn’t had a chance to scout the area for sunrise. this composition was kind of a last minute find that morning. it’s not my favorite, but it’s still easy on the eyes. hope you enjoy it! ❗️learn how i process my photos! the link is in my bio❗️

Lake haiyaha, of rocky mountain national park, is known for its vibrant blue ice and interesting ice features that appear as the lake freezes. as we all may know, water expands as it freezes. due to the large boulders in this lake, the expanding ice causes huge compressive forces to build up until 💥bam, huge cracks form releasing this internal pressure. how cool would it be to watch one of these giant cracks form before you? i can’t wait to return here again this winter! ❗️learn how i process my photos! the link is in my bio❗️

@lukewagnerphoto and i visited one of the greatest locations for sunrise photography in rmnp (in my opinion) last weekend: emerald lake. you’ll find this beautiful alpine lake about a half mile or so past the well-known dream lake. both lakes have hallett peak and the dragon’s tail as a backdrop, however emerald lake gets a much closer perspective. the peaks seem to tower over you as a visitor, and the grandness of scale is difficult to capture in camera. the only way i could fit the entire scene into one frame was through a vertically oriented panorama. the photo above, depicting an interesting dead root system underneath these massive rock walls, is comprised of 4 vertically oriented shots stitched together. i’ll soon be releasing a youtube tutorial on photo stitching in photoshop on this exact image. in the mean time...

This week has been a busy one! i’ve been attending and giving talks at a solar power conference, and it’s turned out to be quite fun! however, it has also prevented me from being able to finish some edits i’m working on. so for now, i’d like to repost one of my favorite shots taken in front of the tetons, except cropped for a vertical orientation this time. the moulton barn. i hope you enjoy! ❗️learn how i process my photos! the link is in my bio❗️

I’ve been waiting for almost a year now to get this composition over bear lake. @abbygomer and i couldn’t have even imagined the amazing and unique conditions we were to be treated with as i headed to rmnp for sunset last sunday. it had been snowing all day, and on a gamble i decided to head to bear lake in hopes of the storm clouds to disperse for sunset, and boy did we get lucky! the waters were absolute glass, and everything was covered in a fresh layer of powder. the clouds didn’t catch too much color, but just enough to give some warm contrast to the cool scene. what a magical moment to experience! ❗️i recorded a full start to finish tutorial on the full crop of this image! i’ll be publishing this soon on my website. for now, check out my first video! the link is in my bio❗️

Not all of the photographs from colorado need mountain landscapes to be captivating, epic, and beautiful! i thought i’d post something different today, with this beautiful sunset i experienced at harmony lakes in @visitftcollins. with the perfectly still waters and an insane sky, this image works beautifully. it’s a human nature thing to be attracted to symmetry. i hope you have possess typical human nature, and enjoy this photo! 🙏 ❗️learn my workflow! the link is in my bio❗️
