The entrance to the home where i lived last month in moulvibazar, bangladesh. i miss hearing the children next door play their instruments and sing. i miss the morning ritual of taking sadia to school with her mother. i miss watching the sunset on the roof with a community of women.

Sheuly, age 11, is a housemaid in moulvibazar, bangladesh. after school she goes to work with her single mother, where she cleans dishes and takes care of children. she started working at age 9. when i spoke with her, sheuly began to cry. she said she dreams about becoming a teacher. many young girls in bangladesh are forced to drop out of school to help support their family.

As 2017 is wrapping up, i am reminded of the journeys i have witnessed throughout the year. @detroitprep2016 is one of detroit’s most diverse schools. the school was intentionally created with hope of cultivating a space for new and longtime families. #expeditionarylearning #eastside #detroit

Luis pena, owner of dulce diamonti garden in southwest detroit. three years ago, luis won $10,000 through the neideas small business grant program. this past fall i re-visited her garden sites and couldn’t believe how much she transformed. with help from her three sons, luis grows food not only to sell at the farmers market but also to share with friends and neighbors. #mother #immigrantsmakeamericagreat #neideas #detroit
