@robinmartinyoga ๐Ÿ™ progress - not to be confused with perfect. ๐Ÿ’™ i have this little collection of backbend photos i took one summer day in 2013 and finally started sharing some progress shots in 2016. i’ll continue to use the 2013 photos as my jumping off point for some of these poses. it’s so fun to have these reminders of how things have evolved over the years. i see a number of differences between the two. i’ll start with the obvious - my hair is down on the left and i’ve learned over time that i do not like to practice with my hair down. it just gets in my way. so up it goes pretty much every day. the second is the overall color/quality of the image. to make things as even as possible, i recorded both as videos on my iphone. i currently use an 8+. not sure the model i had in 2013. maybe a 4? the tone of the photo on the right is a little brownish. that’s due to the northern california wild fires and the wind that’s bringing up some smokey air to our neck of the woods here in washington. my tan can be explained by a recent trip to greece ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท and shiny skin from my sunscreen. the biggest physical difference i see is in the shoulder mobility, as well as side body strength. it didn’t necessarily take 5 years to go from one to the next, but it has taken years of a constant, committed practice to gain strength and flexibility. it’s a slow process if you want to do it in a safe way. a patience game. with breakthroughs come setbacks. there is no perfect, no end goal, no ‘mastering’. asana, for me, is all about focus, awareness and grace. slow movements on the breath. the dedication i have given to this practice continues to bring about changes in my body and my mind. gratitude to you, yoga. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป .

i’m always looking for an excuse to use blocks when i practice, they are like my special alignment buddies!
a block under the b**t in seated forward fold goes a long way for your alignment, makes the pose feel so much more approachable and will help your body open up.

for anyone looking to stretch their hips, adductors, and working on their middle splits give this self-assist a try! the best part? you can pretty much do this anywhere! the idea is to keep your low back long (rather than rounded) go only as far until you start to round your low back.
- start sitting with your b**t against the wall, soles of your feet together (close to your pelvis) with butterflied knees
- use cushions or blocks under your knees to help support the knees.
- take your hands to the wall or any surface behind you, keep your low back long and slowly press yourself down to feel the stretch
- actively press your knees down towards the floor with the strength of your inner thighs (much safer to self activate than apply external force)
- think: chest to arches of feet rather than head to feet.

Today i am going to share 10 yoga poses that will stretch the area around neck. this poses are good to relieve tightness around shoulders,neck , chest,and mid-back.โ €

1๏ธโƒฃshoulders opener with blocks: relax the head down and melt the chest down to floor.  prayer hand behind the back .โ €
2๏ธโƒฃpuppy stretch: relieve the tension around mid-back and thoracic spineโ €
3๏ธโƒฃthread the needle :allow your right shoulder and temple to rest on the mat.โ €
reach your top arm overhead to feel stretch along the side of the bodyโ €
4๏ธโƒฃpectoralis stretch and shoulder opener: this is a bit complicated . first lying on the ground with chest facing down. in this case, reach your left hand out to the side, align your hand with the shoulder with the palm facing down. push your right hand to the floor next to your chest to turn the chest facing up. bend both of your knees and point the knees up toward the ceiling. feet on the floor. reach your right hand back to grap your left hand (if possible). rest your head on a block.โ €
5๏ธโƒฃcow face arms: stretch the muscles around the shoulders, armpits,chest and triceps.โ €
6๏ธโƒฃstanding forward fold with interlaced fingers behind back: soften the knees. hold on to a small towels if you can't reach your hands behind the backโ €
7๏ธโƒฃrabbit pose: my favourite pose in bikram yoga. basically this pose stretches the whole spine from neck to tailbone.โ €
8๏ธโƒฃshoulder opener on wall: place your forearms on the wall parallel to each other. relax the head down and lower the chest down to the floorโ €
9๏ธโƒฃsupraspinatus stretch: best stretch if you do a lot chaturanga ,inversion and arm balances. place the elbows inside the knees and squeeze the knee to the midline . lower down the head . .โ €

there is one more  pose that  i can't fit into the picture. ๐Ÿ”Ÿsupported fish pose: place a medium height block behind you vertically where your shoulder blades will lay on and place another block to rest your head. allow you body to rest on the blocks .โ €

many things have changed since then, first and more obvious one is that i'm not tanned at all now ๐Ÿ˜† but that's ok.

second and more important than the first one, is that i've gained so much confidence when handstanding and i'm almost completely removed the banana back ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŽ‰

but i've so much to learn and achieve yet: shoulders strength, head position, transitions... but everything is coming ๐Ÿค— can't wait to see what my handstand journey is preparing for me! .

oh l sit, how i use to despise you ๐Ÿ˜‚. first off — this is way harder then it looks. the core & shoulder strength that’s needed to be able to do this is just bonkers!
but luckily you can work yourself up to it ๐Ÿ™Œ
warm ups: wrist stretching, forward folds, heat up your core with different variations of crunches, holding boat pose.
tips: push out of your shoulders as much as possible & lock your arms entire time you’re up.

i spent maybe two hours total attempting this #asana . good 30’ warming up the spine and maybe 15’ more doing my hamstrings and quads. i like to warm up plenty when it comes to #backbends and i tried for a good hour and some more the final pose. after many attempts, this was as far as i could go now. the body is always changing and acting differently from one day to the other. there are days when i’m more flexible than others and there are days like this one, that no matter what i do, the body does what it can.
and i have to accept that ๐Ÿ’•
