Mary river turtle the mary river turtle, elusor macrurus, is an endangered short-necked turtle that is endemic to the mary river in south-east queensland, australia. the mary river turtle is one of australia's largest turtles. specimens in excess of 50 cm in carapace length have been recorded. overall colour can vary from rusty red to brown and almost black. the plastron varies from cream to pale pink. the skin colouration is similar to that of the shell and often has salmon pink present on the tail and limbs. the iris can be pale blue. mary river turtles use bimodal respiration, so are capable of absorbing oxygen via the cloaca whilst under water. however, they do regularly come to the surface to breathe air in the usual way. a unique feature of the male mary river turtle is the tail, which can measure almost two-thirds of the carapace length. the tail has haemal arches, a feature lost in all other modern turtles. it is probably a derived feature, but its function is not understood. another unique feature is the exceptionally long barbels under the mandible. proportionately, the mary river turtle has the smallest head and largest hind feet of all the species within the catchment, which contributes to its distinction of being the fastest swimmer. the international conservation body iucn lists it as endangered on the iucn red list. it is australia's second-most endangered freshwater turtle species, after the western swamp turtle (pseudemydura umbrina) of western australia. mary river turtles are also listed in the world's top 25 most endangered turtle species. image ©chris van wyk via @mental_wildlife #discoverocean

A winter eve well spent at khajjiar, chamba! khajjiar is a popular hill station about 26 km from  dalhousie in #himachalpradesh. - one of the 160 places in the world that bear #tropical resemblance to #switzerland, #khajjiar is situated at a height of 6500 feet and bestowed with #natural beauty and pleasant #climate. - vast expanse of green meadows(which is covered with snow during winters) and dense forests besides vistas of majestic snow-clad #himalayan peaks make khajjiar a popular destination among #tourists. - the khajjiar #lake and chamera lake add to the charm of khajjiar. - khajjiar is also called the  #gulmarg(#jammu & #kashmir) of himachal pradesh and serves as the starting point for treks to #chamba, dalhousie and kalatop #wildlife sanctuary among others. - indeed, #trekking is the best way to #explore khajjiar. zorbing, which involves rolling downhill from inside a plastic ‘zorb’, is a popular #recreational activity during april and may. . 📷 mr sunil❄ . #shimlalife #weekendvibes #paradise #january #snowfall #winterseason #beautifuldestinations #snow #himalayas

Some #goodnews regarding mountain lions. 4 captured to be released - here we have the same scenario as in bc & montana but #idaho fish & wildlife opted not to k**l an entire family for doing what is natural. a mother had killed natural prey & was feeding her 3 kittens in the #johnnycreek area in the backyard of a local family. what an amazing experience & privilege to see these animals . . “we had to catch the mom because the three kittens depend on their mom, so we were a little worried this morning how it was going to go, but she came down to the same k**l site that she had been on with the deer and it was just a short chase and we ended up catching her,” says marc porter, idaho fish and game. . . had they just let them be the family would have moved on after eating, but very happy they were not killed. as humans continue to encroach into more wild areas these type of encounters are only going to increase people must take responsibility & educate themselves on how to coexist with these important #apexpredators. humans must start separating myths from fact . . . more at http://www.kpvi.com/news/mountain-lions-captured-in-the-johnny-creek-area/article_a10b7a7a-df82-11e6-a1e9-c7e66899205b.html . . #savemountainlions #doingnothingwrong #themoreyouknow #keystonespecies #pumas #catamounts #lions #northamerica #bigcats #conservation #wildlife #urbanwildlife #coexist #nature #sundaynews #animalshaverights #mountainlion #savehabitat #sharetheworld #healthyecosystem
