High-bar squats for olympic lifting.

the back squat is an amazing tool for building general strength and athleticism. in this video you'll see two types of squats and both are correct. they come in two varieties - 1. the posterior chain/back dominant and 2. anterior chain/leg dominant.

the most common tendency i see is when "standing up" from a squat - the back dominant squat where lifters shift their weight to the heels - and consequently load their back. this isn't bad per se, but it puts unnecessary stress on the lower back muscles. it is often demonstrated when lifters snatch/clean well until about 85% of their 1rm...then the h*****g begins and they have no more vertical drive. they have to rush getting under the bar... and it takes them 2 years to stand up.

in the second squat, you are deliberately training the legs to drive upward. you are not loading the back muscles much, in fact you'll likely lift less weight. you are training balance and timing up catch the infamous (bounce) stretch reflex. but...you will be standing up and moving the bar vertically and you will be standing up very quickly. in fact, you may experience an ease in your lifts you have never seen before.

give each squat a try and let me know what you think. both are correct and can be executed without pain. but which one do you think will help your vertical bounding/jumping muscles more for sports? i'll leave that up to you.
