Cognitive behavioral therapy is recognized as one of the most research-supported treatment for psychological issues and disorders. it is based on the simple idea that by changing the way we think and act in the present moment, we can change the way we feel. this therapy model proposes that most psychological problems/disorders are a result of dysfunctional thinking and are maintained by self-sabotaging behavior influenced by maladaptive beliefs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
cognitive restructuring is a cbt exercise that helps us identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns (swipe left to learn more) and helps us devise alternative ways of reacting to distressful situations. in this post, i created a tool that can be used when we struggle with negative thoughts. by answering these questions when we face distressful situations, we can learn more about what triggers certain unhelpful thoughts so we can address and reverse them more easily. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
years of thinking a certain way creates faulty connections in our brain. our brains are predisposed to making connections between our thoughts, experiences, behavior, and consequences - whether a true connection exists or not. this can result in a biased perspective which is hard to recognize until we do the work ourselves to reverse this way of thinking. this is why it is very important that we keep challenging our thoughts repeatedly until this way of self-regulating and self-reflection becomes automatic to us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
if you are suffering from feelings of depression, anxiety, or general dissatisfaction, i encourage you to practice this exercise when you feel distressed and modify your cognitive distortions by replacing them with more logical ones. do this over and over until you improve your recognition and response to these distortions.

Moving through hardship, trauma, and old patterns isn't the only thing that changes and transforms us. joy, connection, and goodness change and transform us, too.

we easily forget that doing "the work" (healing, growing, developing, shifting, transforming, changing) doesn't mean only doing the work. it also means making room for what's good, even if it's only moment by moment. it means making room for just being. connecting. laughing. creating moments of pleasure. noticing ease. reveling in genuine connection. feeling presence when it arises. dancing like a wild soul (because we are). going for a walk just to walk. savoring your favorite meal. sitting and watching trees collect raindrops. having a sweet phone call with someone you love. tasting your tea. allowing compliments and just saying thank you. listening to the song that invokes a sweet memory. feeling the earth in your hands. sharing stories. taking photos of things that catch your eye. reminiscing. watching the fluffy tv show when it calls to you. ignoring the rules and shoulds. paying attention to your aliveness.

where do you find joy? connection? goodness? lightness? don't forget to include the good stuff in your inner work because it's a part of it. it matters. it deeply matters. and it, too, changes us. 💫

Diet and nutrition don't start with food - they start with how you relate to your food. i'm going to make a conservative estimate and say that 80% of people have a poor relationship with food. this means they are either afraid of it, addicted to it, or indifferent towards it. ⠀

do you know what kind of relationship you have with the food you eat? stop and think about it for a moment. if food were a person would you consider them a good friend, vice versa? i'm guessing a lot of people haven't really thought about this before mainly because, as a culture, we've moved so far away from nature. some children raised in urban areas don't even know that food comes from the ground!⠀

this week i've been talking a lot about the way you relate to yourself shaping your reality, and food is no exception. food, and how you interact with it, may play a major role in your struggles and what keeps you stuck. so, here's something to try...⠀

pick a meal, let's say dinner, and follow these guidelines - ⠀
1. sit down to eat ⠀
2. take three deep breaths and smile connecting with a feeling of gratitude ⠀
3. say 'thank you' to someone or something for making this meal possible⠀

take note of how these simple steps shift the way you view your meal. it may not seem like much at first, but over time i would be curious to see what changes in other areas of your life! #enterthethreshold⠀

It’s that time of year when the seasonal ‘depression’ kicks in, we’re excited for christmas but stressed about everything that the lead up involves. so much organisation in so little time!
i struggle with my mental health regularly, so added stress and extra things i need to remember can sometimes be a little overbearing. anxiety is the devil.
i also have a strict diet due to intolerances, so walking down the supermarket aisles where the pigs in blankets, gooey camembert cheese and just the general array of yummy christmas food is on display is torture! especially when life hasn’t always been this way. you see, i now have two small people who depend on me, a partner who works his backside off whilst i’m a stay-at-home mum, so if i don’t do something - it doesn’t get done! so lately i’ve been feeling quite deflated, probably due to the lack of sleep because of a teething toddler, learning how to be an accepted ‘school mum’ and remembering every social event of my 5 year old’s calendar, and falling off the wagon of my strict diet due to comfort eating! some days my thoughts are so loud, that they distract me from what’s right in front of me. the things that really matter, and the people who need me to keep going. so this from now on will be my therapy, documenting the highs and lows. because both are important to get us where we need to be. people may not be understanding nor compassionate, but if my waffling about how the kids have driven me mad 🤯, or how i’ve been stuck on the loo for 3 hours due to eating the wrong thing 💩🙈 helps even one mum or dad, or anyone that is struggling, to feel like they’re not alone then that will be a bonus 🤞💫 #anxiety #depression #mum #mummywithmentalhealth #keepgoing #imfine #ibs #bloating #therapy #writingtherapy #blog #intollerance #glutenfreevegan #glutenfreeliving #dairyfreeliving #mentalhealthawareness

Holding onto our story of victimhood can feel sooooo d**n good, but is it? .

like any other drug, victimhood silences the spaces inside us calling for help. we cannot see or hear anything but our story of misery and we dig our heels in, far too stubborn to look any other direction. often the death bed is where many finally have the revelation of regret...when it’s too late to do anything but die. .

i spent many years convincing myself and others that i was powerless. i blamed my childhood, my abusers, and relationships for my troubles. i was judgmental, controlling, jealous, and terrified to admit i was wrong. i distracted myself with booze, sex, gossip, excuses, and self-loathing. needless to say, that didn’t work out so well. .

blaming everyone else for our s****y circumstances is an easy trap and many well-intentioned folks around us will enable the “poor me” stories we tell them. misery loves her some company. .

these 4 things helped me find my way out of the prison of victimhood. maybe you’ll find some value in it too. 🌹

#1-own your faults.
we can all be a******s & clueless idiots. you are no exception so stop pretending to be flawless. no ones buying it. .

#2 - talk to a pro
find an amazing therapist and tell them every dark thing about you. don’t try to impress them...be honest about what a j**k you are. they wont believe the perfection lies anyway. do this weekly for at least a year.

#3- stay or go
accept who people are (refer back to we are all f****d up) and then decide if you like having them in your space with their inevitable flaws. if you don’t, move on without malice. much of this decision making will come after you’ve spent ample time in therapy. .

#4 - own your responses
we can’t always predict nor control what happens around us and some things (and people) really do suck. however, we always have the power to choose how we respond. if you chose poorly, own it and try to learn a better way for the next time something doesn’t go as you hoped...which 100% will happen.

the beauty of some countries and the way they live is that when people put their phones away, real conversations begin to happen!

for instance, in a world today where people so easily miss what the other person said, someone keenly remembering what you said and mentioning it later, is a treat and a pleasant surprise to the heart💝. it tells me -they were paying attention and were with me all that while.
being here in nz, i'm trying to balance between my on-line and real-time life. it isn't easy when one comes from countries where practically everything was on-line at work (on phone). i know i'll be taking breaks and finding my connect here- with myself, with loved ones and really allowing my experiences to sink in.

'i don't know where i belong', i told my therapist the other day.

her reply was 'who determines if you belong somewhere? we can all belong everywhere and nowhere. we determine it ourselves.' i love this as this takes us from a state of self-pity and feeling helpless to a situation of empowerment. we can belong to a place, a person, to the world, to ourselves. -

when i thought about it, i knew that deep down i always belong to myself. everything else is temporary. i can feel like i belong with certain people or a place, but this might also shift over time. so instead of saying i am lost or i don't belong, i can say, i belong to me. or i belong to cork at this point. there is no real point in asking the question of belonging. be where you are and start from there. 'follow your curiosity' is a quote from elizabeth gilbert by the way that i like to remind myself off. - “there is so much about my fate that i cannot control, but other things do fall under the jurisdiction. i can decide how i spend my time, whom i interact with, whom i share my body and life and money and energy with. i can select what i can read and eat and study. i can choose how i'm going to regard unfortunate circumstances in my life-whether i will see them as curses or opportunities. i can choose my words and the tone of voice in which i speak to others. and most of all, i can choose my thoughts.” ― elizabeth gilbert

and i believe all this will help create a sense of belonging in itself. in the end, we are all floating on a blue marble in space. we can't wait for other people or situations to give us the validation we crave. we all have our place in this crazy, vast universe somehow and we can find the magic over and over, inside us, when we connect with nature, deeply with others, just by being here and breathing. you belong. always. -
