It’s not every day you can kayak out to the most famous tree in the country! 🚣🏼‍♂️🌳
while this determined willow tree does sit within lake wanaka, it’s usually just out of the water, or hovering around ankle-deep, providing the perfect photo op for tourists. 📸🏔💫
after weeks of relentless rain and snowmelt, the lake is bursting at its seams and water is rising further up the tree. so with this unsettled weather set to continue, will that wanaka tree survive to tell the tale? 🌧💦

Je suis comme un gamin qui vient d’avoir son premier appareil photo. a chaque nouveau lieu ici en nouvelle zélande je prends tellement de plaisir à shooter et notamment avec ce lieu magique. je crois qu’on est resté 3h devant pour le coucher du soleil et pour avoir des belles lumières sans les touristes. car oui ce petit arbre posé dans l’eau est l’un des incontournable de nouvelle zélande donc il a fallut être patient pour avoir personne sur la photo surtout que la photo est en pose longue de 25” ! d’ailleurs j’avais oublié mon filtre nd lol. il a donc fallut que j’en achète un sur place avec les prix qui vont avec 🙄. mais j’avoue être content du résultat car le wanaka tree vaut clairement le coup. visuellement c’est une dinguerie, il est posé au milieu du lac avec une chaîne de montagne en toile de fond. c’est juste le kiff pour tout photographe. je vous le répète mais ce pays est dingue. dingue !!!

Photo by @michaelclarkphoto | that wanaka tree under a starry night in wanaka, new zealand. i try hard not to go to the touristy spots when i travel but sometimes like a magnet they draw you in. on any given day during the day there might be thirty to two hundred people out here photographing the wanaka tree or taking selfies in front of the wanaka tree. my hotel was just up the beach from this site, so i decided if i am going to photograph it i will go out at 2 am and capture it under the stars. i was the only one out there freezing my buns off and taking photos that night. with a little light painting (using a small flashlight) i was able to highlight the tree. i have seen a lot of images of this tree thanks to instagram and i have to say many of them are pretty epic, which is why i gave in and went out that night. #thatwanakatree #wanaka #newzealand

There's a lot of freaking stars out there... being out here, shooting the night sky, you realize how insignificant we truly are. it's so peaceful yet super humbling. the skies in new zealand are insanely dark and i've been lucky enough to capture some amazing astro images! especially the aurora which i've already shared with you. in a couple days there might be another geomagnetic storm and if the conditions are right you best believe i'm heading back out there. fingers crossed!

#thatwanakatree 很有感觉的一棵树
a spontaneous decision to drive out in the middle of the night to shoot since the sky was clear. this almost didn’t happened because it was pitch dark when we arrived at the car park and we didn’t know where the tree was exactly (plus i was a scaredy cat). we were just about to abort plan when a figure appeared from the wooded area. one guy had return from the lakeside and pointed us to where the tree was. turns out it was just a 5min walk and we found another fellow shutterbug out night shooting in the freezing cold too!
this is a tree that by some wonder grew out from the waters. didn’t think much about it in the daytime, but the idea of shooting it against a night sky seemed pretty interesting, and it turned out really pretty on frame (:

wanaka was such a cute little town with hiking trails and a beautiful winery (rippon vineyards). i wanted to capture some different angles of this iconic, over-photographed tree growing out of lake wanaka.

you'll more than likely find hordes of tourists, all trying to capture this iconic tree... but in reality there are other cool trees also growing out of the water if you just walk little further down the trail 🤷🏼‍♀️.
