Relational trauma happens in the context of close attachment relationships, usually when there is an imbalance of power. ⁣

in other words, it is likely to happen in our primary relationships with either parent, caregivers, guardians, or those with authority and great control over us. ⁣

relational trauma are events or situations that happen more than once & usually over a period of time, making it also, usually, cumulative.⁣

but what makes these relational experiences traumatic? the bottom line is this: when children experience traumas and stress, it is not necessarily the event itself that becomes the problem. if a child has securely attached, attuned, loving, consistent caregivers who can support them in metabolizing the stress, organizing & making sense of it, the child can more or less move through trauma or stressor functionally.⁣

however, if the trauma or stressor is happening within the attachment relationship with the parent or guardian, the child, therefore, cannot usually rely on the adult to help them integrate & process the stress.⁣

or if the trauma or stress happens outside of the attachment relationship but the caregiving adult still fails to support the child in managing, healing, or recovering from it, a child will likely develop maladaptive and compensatory responses to organize their experience simply because, as children, they do not have the resources and coping skills to do much else.⁣

maladaptive responses are numerous and varied but essentially, if left unaddressed and untreated, they can lead the child to become an adult who has ineffective beliefs and behaviors about themselves, about others, & about the world (see my previous post of “trauma shows up in your life as”).⁣

now, as challenging as it can be to begin recovering from a childhood of complex relational trauma, i do personally & professionally think that it is possible and that it is one of the most worthwhile journeys anyone could ever make.⁣ in essence, it’s a journey to reclaim your authentic self. ⁣

have compassion for yourself, this work is not easy. there is a lot of grieving, fear, & anger that needs to be processed but with the right help it’s is possible

شاید چند روز بنشینم خانه، کتاب هام رو بخونم، برنامه‌های سال جدید وچشم انداز های تازه رو بچینم.
چند تا مبحث بود که مدتها بود میخواستم یاد بگیرم، اونهارو دنبال کنم.
کار ها و پروژه های طراحیم رو در خانه انجام بدم و برای شروع مجدد کلاس‌ها کمی دست نگه دارم. .
این سکوت‌های اجباری، اولش سختِ اما خیلی وقتها برامون لازمه که یکم با خودمون آروم و قرار بگیریم و اینبار در حالی که باید بیشتر مراقب خودمون و دیگران باشیم..

به افکار منفی دامن نزنیم.
صبر کنیم..
به وقتش هر اتفاقی که قرار باشه بیافته، میافته.. پس بهتره خودمون رو آماده و قوی کنیم.

Stress isn't necessarily a bad thing. it can actually strengthen our telomeres if it is not chronic stress that doesn't have a foreseeable end (the example she gave was being a caregiver). so this is a pretty cute little illustration of that. what stresses you out and doesn't k**l you actually might make your #telomeres stronger (and therefore lengthen your life). 🙏

Poop on a stick.
a week and a half ago i was rear ended while driving my van with my four beautiful girlies inside. thankfully other than a little whiplash, we are all ok. but my van is squished. badly. so badly that the insurance company has declared it a total loss. 😭 i know it's silly but i loved my van. and although they are giving us $ that supposedly is what our van is worth, it won't be enough to cover a decent replacement. so...poop on a stick. this s****d little accident is messing with my peace. it is bringing out all the insecurities that i have around finances. and i am not handling it well. but god... as i sit and watch my girls do gymnastics, i am reminded that his grace covers me. he covers my worry, he covers my stress, he covers my anger-fueled outburst. this reminder, "my grace is sufficient" gives me peace and "my power is made perfect in weakness" gives me hope. so, today i hand it over. my hopelessness, my worry, my fears, all of it. because he's bigger and his grace is sufficient.

1. encourage your kids to face his/her fears, not run away from them.

when we are afraid of situations, we avoid them. however, avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations maintains the anxiety. instead, if kids face their fears, they will learn that the anxiety reduces naturally on its own over time. the body cannot remain anxious for a very long period of time, so there is a system in the body that calms the body down. usually your anxiety will reduce within 20-45 minutes if you stay in the anxiety-provoking situation. .
2. tell & repeat to your kids that it is okay to be imperfect.

often we feel that it is necessary for our kids to succeed in sports, school, and performance situations. but sometimes we forget that kids need to be kids. school becomes driven by grades, not by enjoyment of learning if an 85 is good, but not good enough. this is not to say that striving is not important. it is important to encourage your kids to work hard but equally important to accept and embrace your kids mistakes and imperfections. .
3. focus on the positives.

many times, anxious and stressed kids can get lost in negative thoughts and self-criticism. they may focus on how the glass is half empty instead of half-full and worry about future events. the more that you are able to focus on your kids positive attributes and the good aspects of a situation, the more that it will remind your kids to focus on the positives.

4. schedule relaxing activities.
.
kids need time to relax and be kids. unfortunately, sometimes even fun activities, like sports, can become more about success than they are about fun. instead, it is important to ensure that your kids engage in play purely for the sake of fun. this may include scheduling time each day for your kids to play with toys, play a game, play a sport (without it being competitive), doing yoga, paint, have a tea party, put on a play, or just be silly.

Quickly relieve stress and anxiety with these posture shifts⠀

posture does affect the way you feel. a slumped, rounded posture can worsen feelings of depression and make it harder to focus while sitting up straight boosts energy and self-esteem.⠀

1. lift your chest to boost breathing. tight muscles in your chest and abdomen pull your rib cage down. this posture increases stress due to shallow breathing that is correlated with anxiety.⠀

try this: place one hand on your sternum, just beneath your collar bones. lift your chest up and forward into your hand. notice how your shoulders shift back automatically? it should require little effort to keep them there.⠀

2. put your feet on the floor to feel grounded. anxiety is a symptom of living too far in the future and worrying about what might happen. one powerful way to come back to the present is to connect to sensory perception, and your feet are rich in sensory receptor cells that send all kinds of data to your brain.⠀

try this: while sitting, put your feet flat on the floor. lean forward a bit and pay attention to how the weight in your feet increases as your body shifts. press your feet down and feel your spine stretch slightly in response.⠀

3. bring your knees together to engage your core. core muscles help you sit up straighter, which in turn helps your body take up more space. yogis have known for generations that expansive poses calm anxiety, and modern science backs up that claim.⠀

try this: place a yoga block or small ball between your knees and hold it firmly enough so that it doesn’t fall. feel how your abs come online when your knees are drawing toward each other? this will help you keep your spine upright, decreasing the pressure on your breathing.⠀

4. pay attention to space above your head to stand taller. as we age, there is a tendency to shrink slightly. sure, spinal discs compress and eventually even bones break down somewhat, but most of us are losing quite a bit of height to slouching.⠀

try this: place your hand on the top of your head. stretch your head upward into your hand and notice how your neck and upper spine elongate.⠀

i’m officially back at uni in 5 days 😅 i want to use my weekend to enjoy and relax so i’m getting my prework/ notes done today and tomorrow. these particular notes are for my pathophysiology and pharmacology subject. just trying to nail down the basic before my class. i’m typing these notes as this subject is content heavy, i am making flash cards as well and have shared this document across my devices. additionally i will print out, highlight and write over these around exam time. 👍🏻
