Symmetry doesn’t exist. we all have a dominant side and minor strength & muscle imbalances. it’s normal.
.
however, if your training is highly unbalanced, you could be feeding into these natural asymmetries and putting yourself at risk of injury. it’s very common amongst gym goers and a dominant reason why aches, pains, stiff joints and tight muscles are ‘the norm’.
.
3️⃣ things you can do to prevent this happening:
.
1️⃣ base your training on movement patterns not individual muscle groups.
.
📝 squat, hinge, lunge/split stance, upper push, upper pull (horizontal & vertical plane).
.
exercises from these categories should form the base of your training. isolation work should be sprinkled in secondary to this.
.
2️⃣ do plenty of core, hip and shoulder stability work.
.
📝 for the core, don’t forget any of the 3 primary categories: anti-extension, anti-lateral flexion, anti-rotations. for the shoulders, go to town on external rotation work, lower trap work and scapula / rotator cuff stability drills. for the hips, do some work for your hip flexors, lateral glutes (abductors) and inside leg (adductors) ... these muscles tend to get neglected.
.
3️⃣ program unilateral and offset loading periodically.
.
📝 if you’re married to the barbell, you may be favoring your dominant side. using dumbbells forces both sides of your body to work independently. program lots of single leg and single arm exercises like split squats, lateral lunges, single arm press and single arm rows. alternating presses are fantastic also. offset loading is another method that provides unique challenges to one side of the body.

Bench cuing: keep the pressure on your upper back and traps⁣⁣⁣

in order to generate as much stability and control on the bench as possibility, picture setting up as if you’re trying to develop pressure around the areas that are going to stabilize and drive the lift. literally imagine what it would feel like to have an incredible amount of pressure built up around your retracted and depressed scapulae up throughout your traps, then do the following:⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
lie on the bench and line up so your eyes are four inches in front of the bar (toward your feet). using your legs, drive yourself into the bench to put pressure on the upper back and traps. your eyes should now be even with the bar. this is the same pressure that needs to be applied while pushing the barbell.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
even if this isn’t your normal setup on bench, it’s worth a shot in order to physically feel the concept previously described. if you experience it, you can decide and experiment with how to integrate it into your setup and press.

A common misconception is sweating profusely, soreness, your heart racing and/or almost killing yourself = a good workout. this is not true!
-
so what defines a good workout? 1) progressive overload, aka making the workout more difficult overtime. there are various ways to do this; increasing your sets, reps, or the duration of isometrics. -
other signs? 2) listening to your body. if you are too sore to train, do a light workout for active recovery instead. ensuring proper recovery will take you further long term, rather than pushing when you are not 100%. train smarter, not harder. finally, 3) having fun! it is much easier to stick with goals when you enjoy working on them. -
with my intro to strength program, i wanted to enable all three factors above. that's why i created this program to continually challenge you, allow flexibility to adjust which days you train, and customize the exercises to work for your body so you can enjoy it and not feel like anything is out of reach.

🔥hip flexor warm-up🔥

an excellent option to get your hip flexors going prior to any lower body training session. it’s also solid for ending your lower body work out if you are looking to get a nice pump for the anterior thigh region.
perform 3-4 sets of 15-20 reps per side

intent full tips:
☑️ fully extend the knee
☑️ externally (outward) rotate the leg
☑️ maintain upper trunk tension (valsava)
☑️ dorsiflex the door (point toes towards head)

foam rolling is another widely known tool that is used nowadays widespread across both the athletic & non-athletic population.
.
it is mainly promoted and taught based on the notion that it can lengthen/release fascia, break down adhesions, and/or tear up scar tissue. .
the problem is that it is all of these claims are false both from a biological & physiological standpoint.
.
furthermore, research has repeatedly shown that its effects on both performance and recovery are minor and partly negligible.
.
nowadays some clinicians try to use and play with placebo and nocebo effects "in favor of" their patients. whether that is considered ethical & whether it helps in reality our patients is something that each clinician needs to think by himself and reflect on it.
.
in our own eyes, there are two problems that are interconnected with this mentality (or the use of any kind of passive modality or tool that has been be promoted by different companies to be effective). first of all and most importantly is the fact that we are overusing any latest tool, before first spending time on reading, and understanding basic anatomy & physiology, biology, the basic principles of strength & conditioning, as well as sharpen up our communicational and clinical reasoning skills.
.
the second problem is that we tend to overutilize any latest tool (whether it's effective or not) without first understanding it's role in rehab & applying clinical reasoning on its use.
.
as clinicians we are the people who can upgrade or even downgrade the profession. the choice is on the hands of each individual clinician.
.
it is our responsibility as clinicians to protect the profession, promote it and offer the best available treatment to patients.

this exercise is more on the advanced side. it’s working on improving landing and jumping mechanics in different directions.

jumping and landing on the bosu ball will help teach you how to properly absorb force and land in a good position. most, if not all sports involve some sort of jumping going forward, to the side, or even backwards. being able to have the strength and ability to land properly is critical for injury prevention and performance.

for all your ‘leg curl’ movements, keep your feet as straight as possible. it’s ok to let your knees roll out a little but but keep your feet straight. it’s easy for the hamstrings to fatigue and your hip to externally rotate to draw on your lateral hamstring. we do plenty of movements putting stress on this area that’s why it’s important to keep the load more medially in the hammies on your accessories movements. this also gives us a chance to train a little bit of hip internal rotation.⁣⁣

...what do your feet do when you fatigue on hamstring curls? do you even know? next time you do some is a great time to pay attention and possibly do some correction. ⁣⁣

Putting my client jayson through a slammer of a corrective exercise with the focus being around creating the right force vectors so that his pelvis stays balanced in neutral while lunging backwards. it's still a work in progress being that we just put it together during this past session. i'm always thinking to create better movement! 🧠 why? because everything from sports performance to the universal sequence has everything to do with moving!!! 💥

Went 5/6. not the result i was hoping for but still put up a big total and landed myself another s****h pb.
this was my 3rd competition and i am extremely happy with the progress i have made this year under @jmkstrength
i had to follow myself on all attempts, due to @jmkstrength superb programming and comp preparation i was able to lift one after the other and make each lift as good as the last one.
