Startrails i.

celestial swirls. it's been so long since i attempted shooting star trails. i've imagined reflected star trails for years, but such perfect weather is rare.

this image represents the rotation of the earth for more than 5 hours. do you see the blue streaks and the orange ones? these are stars of different sizes and temperatures. blue stars are typically gigantic young stars with surface temperatures between 20 and 40 thousand degrees. on the other hand, yellow orange stars are usually much older and smaller, with surface temperatures ranging from 5 to 10 thousand degrees. you should know, that when i say "young" and "old" stars, i'm talking of cosmic timescales, with young stars being in the 100 million year range and old stars being in the couple of billion year range.

it is often staggering to think about such facts, buried in the beauty of the night sky, we often take for granted.

this image is a stack of 540x30s images shot with a 24mm lens at iso 800. more than 20 airplanes passed thought my frame, over the course of 5 hours. i found them immensely irritating, as they ruined the symmetry and stark beauty of the night. i painstakingly cloned out each blinking line of blue and red light, before stacking the images.

We are in constant motion. at the equator, the earth rotates at just over 1000 mph, or once every 24 hours. the orbital speed of the earth around the sun is approximately 67000 mph, or once every 365.25 days. the orbital speed of our entire solar system is nearly 8x that velocity — roughly 515,000 mph, or once every 230...million earth years! for context, it takes light (traveling at 299,792,458 m/s, or approximately 670,618,000 mph) over 100,000 earth years just to cross our moderately sized galaxy from end to end! 🤯

Throwback to this past summer while traveling around the utah-arizona border. this area is a relatively unknown patch of weathered sandstone, hidden within the desert expanse of vermillion cliffs national monument, near the southern border. dubbed ‘white pocket’, the area is covered in a soft grayish layer of cauliflower-like sediment, which formed as a result of a massive sand slide triggered by an earthquake several million years ago.
due to rolling cloud cover, the milky way was largely obscured during my visit to white pocket — but fortunately, i was able to capture a pristine sky the following night to complement the unique features of white pocket’s desert landscape.

only a few more weeks until the start of this year’s milky way season! where will you be shooting first?

Frozen tree

Stars over the frozen waterfall. it's hard to make out, but there is water running down over the ice falls. and, as it was -12°f that night, the stream was smoking! i actually had to discard over two hours worth of frames -- the first two, until my led panel light finally died in the cold -- because of all the steam and haze. i wound up stacking 1383 frames, about 8 hours and 10 minutes' worth, with only a single frame that included an illuminated foreground.

Finally, but certainly not least: my main composition from this past weekend. i knew i wanted to try to capture polaris hovering right over the lighthouse in order to get beautiful circumpolar trails. i knocked out a few other compositions, and around 10pm i started to set up for this shot. by this point, the big dipper has just rose above the horizon and it was relatively easy for my to line this up. i set my intervalometer for 2 hours and prepared myself to do a lot of waiting. i pasted the time by reading a book, observing the stars (no moon and no light pollution = amazing amount of stars!), and by giving the lovely @sydneylutin a phone call. around 12am, i shut my timer off and went back to my hotel. i was rolling through my shots before i went to bed and i could tell the stars were almost perfectly rotating around the light. here’s the final product! enjoy & let me know what ya think down below!

Here is another c***k at some colorful star trails. over 2.5 hours of shooting went into this image, on a night where the temp was single digits. @tim.costello and i spent most of the time in the car watching you tube. so i always thought i was a bit crazy pursuing this hobby of nightscaping... hanging out in remote areas, on the darkest nights of the year, often alone and sometimes in brutal weather conditions. well after this night i learned i'm not even remotely close to crazy. come to find out tim is a passionate follower of wingsuit basejumping (i call them flying squirrel men). sitting in the car, tim is showing me videos of these guys in action. i'm not crazy, these dudes are crazy! you should've heard tim's comments as we're watching, "this guy died", "he's dead", "this guy hit a bridge going 150 mph. so did the 3 people behind him... they're all dead". it's complete insanity! i think i'll stick to a normal hobby... like night photography! /

This is from a while back.. it was such a beautiful night of northern lights! i think this was shot over the course of about 3 hours.
when you do a star stack you loose detail of the aurora, that’s why it looks like a green blob on the horizon. i’ll post up the time lapse soon and you’ll be able to see how spectacular it really was!
