Meet 21-year-old photographer and director myles loftin (@mylesloftin ), an advocate for sharing stories of underrepresented communities and stories. “probably more often than not i would say that i felt like an outsider in spaces. and i guess maybe that’s why i’m so passionate about making sure that people feel seen, because i know what it feels like to not be seen and to not feel comfortable in a space,” says the parsons school of design student.⁣

“i #shareblackstories through my photography, making sure to highlight the black community as much as i can,” says myles. “also just through me existing. i am a black story walking.”⁣

this black history month, we’ve partnered with @bet to #shareblackstories and support #advocates doing amazing work on instagram and beyond. new episodes drop every tuesday in february. 🖤⁣

Meet drag artist and performer shea couleé (@sheacoulee ), an advocate for lgbtq rights and body positivity. “i am a black, g*y drag queen who makes my living doing what i love,” says shea. “in my life, the biggest hurdle i've had to overcome has been to just love myself. you can’t be good to anybody if you’re not good to yourself first.”⁣

“it’s important for me to #shareblackstories because i don’t feel that positive black stories get shared enough! i feel like in 2020, celebrating my blackness is just being unapologetic in my blackness.”⁣

(mega stoked to partner with @delta to celebrate #blackhistorymonth and tell black travel stories! #ad)⁣

when you travel, especially as a black woman, you almost expect to look like an outsider. if you aren't traveling to a country in the afro diaspora, you can almost predict being stared at or someone asking about your hair. it's basically a given. ⁣

however, during my most recent trip to jordan, that didn't happen at all. jordan itself is just hours from the continent of africa, and jordanians come in all shapes, shades, and sizes. many people outside of the middle east might think that being black or arab is mutually exclusive, but they're not. afro-jordanians are from the jordan valley, as far back as they can trace their ancestry. the fact that i can see people in the community that literally look like me was incredibly heartwarming and inspiring. ⁣

i stayed at a desert camp, captain's camp, and every night there was a huge feasts for the guests. i was in jordan, but suddenly i was also transported back to my grandmother's house, whenever it was someone's birthday. the camp chefs became the uncles i grew up with, who would laugh and joke about which one of them had the best bbq. ⁣

"do you speak arabic?" one of the staff asked, offering to wrap a khimar (headscarf) around my head. i shook my head, but he grinned. "'ant eayila," he translated. "you are family." ⁣

and of course, there was dancing, so much dancing. even after solemnly swearing i can't dance (🥴), my new friends looped their arms under mine and carried me into the dance circle.⁣

i fell into my bed, exhausted, but with a smile. i didn't expect to feel at home in jordan. i didn't expect to see myself in the locals. yet there i was, quads burning from dropping it low and the impending food coma killing me to sleep under the stars. i didn’t expect to feel like i belonged. but travel has a way of reminding you to expect the unexpected. ✊🏽⁣

Great uncle john earlie moss
b. 1897
dinwiddie, virginia

i found these photos in my paternal grandmother’s belongings. on the back nearly written was ‘cousin john e moss’. i never knew of him, he lived his adult in nyc and i remembered my grandmother swearing she always visited her family in nyc once i moved here. as i started piecing my genealogical tree together l, discovered john on the 1900 (and other) census, listed as my great-grandfathers son. 😱
my great grandfather had a few ‘wives’...my great grandmother being the 3rd and final. this made him grandmother’s step brother...but you know, black families and secrets are a tale as old as time. we don’t know much about his mother but i have since located and met john’s grandchildren, my distant cousins. we’ve been painstakingly piecing it all together ever since. 🖤 interestingly enough john ended up marrying my great grandmother’s niece pearl.
it’s a lot to wrap the mind around but here we are! <<<swipe>>>>

#issazakiyyahcelebration happy black history month ♥️🖤💚☀️
i made this vid 1-year ago...ever thought about the shorelines and what they’ve seen?
i often do.
and, while my history as an #african does not begin with the enslavement of #african peoples in america, my other proudly assumed identity and historical experiences as an #africanamerican woman is shaped by american slavery, that awful institution under which my direct ancestors (great-great granddaddy #bossbrooks b. 1850) survived to make room for me.
every picture of our ancestors coming into the harbors and ports is usually etched in sunny conditions. well, there were wintery, cold ones as well. ‘member that. “i am not african because i was born in africa, but because africa was born in me.” #kwamenkrumah #bhm20 #shareblackstories #day24 #shorelines

“growing up, life was about living for the future and not the moment. one of my best friends and i, used to meet up in front of our brooklyn building every day after school or each other’s apartment to discuss our future plans. i must say we had a lot of aspiration as 11 year olds. he was suppose to be a rapper and i was suppose to be his producer, we looked up to ‪the neptunes‬ lol. we would talk about how cool traveling the world would be, we discussed the amount fun we would have learning about different cultures, and tried to imagine what our music would sound like outside of america. although the dream sounded amazing at the time, we told ourselves that once we turn 25 we would drop our first album, we felt like 3-4 years after graduating college felt about right. i’m not going to sit here and say we were actually good because we weren’t lol, but we were just kids with so many big dreams and believed that time played a factor in all decisions we make in life.⁣

during my first year off to college, my world shifted when i learned that life was not about living when it was convenient. my friend was murdered. all i could think was, “but we had plans in a few years” “how?” “why?” i will never be able to accept what happened, but i did finally accept the fact that life was about living for today because tomorrow may have different plans. ever since, taking an annual trip or 3 has been mandatory for my friends and i. pictured here are my friends and i taking one of our annual trips to the motherland. tribute... jc miller (christian fiction)

favorite quote: "bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, i am the dream and the hope of the slave. i rise i rise i rise." maya angelou

excerpt: i am rahab: a novel part 1 “you are a beautiful gift which i was too afraid to receive. i know that now. if you would have me, as jacked up as i am…” puah laughingly suggests. rahab and mags laugh and cry along. “i’d love to have you. i can’t promise i’ll be a good mother like big mama was. i don’t claim to know everything about mothering, but there’s one thing i know for sure. when life pulls you so far down that resurrection seems insurmountable, you keep living anyway. in spite of it all, i'm still here,” puah declares, not apologizing for her actions nor sugar-coating her mistakes. she told rahab all she needs to know, at least all she’s willing to say. her life is what it is, and loving rahab begins a new chapter. --------------------

Happy monday, fam! can you believe we’re entering into the last week of black history month? keep checking back this week for more bhm facts. in the newsletter today, we’re highlighting a story about black families leaving chicago, a city that they flocked to during the great migration. we’ll also highlight some new black history being shared in the @nytimes #1619project and we’re sharing the journey of one photographer who followed ethiopia’s women migrants to saudi arabia as they seek work as domestic servants.

💃🏾⁣ let's take it all the way back to that very first backpacking trip ten years ago. over the next few days let’s talk about traveling while black this week in honor of black history month in the usa!⁣
👩🏾‍💻⁣
after moving from nigeria to the usa for college, i'd gotten used to being one of a few black people in class at university, and even at work. but for some reason, it did not occur to me that this would be the same when i picked up a backpack and decided to go to europe solo.⁣

“and yet still we rise from our own ashes.
we never accept no.
with each rebirth comes new strength.
black women are phoenixes.”
—patrice caldwell, introduction, a phoenix first must burn
🔥
happy monday, my friends! i am ready for fresh beginnings this week.
🔥
did you know that today marks the 14th anniversary of the passing of the great octavia butler? to recognize and celebrate her work, i want to tell you about a very special upcoming release that is a direct descendent of her work.
🔥
i was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of a phoenix first must burn: sixteen stories of black girl magic, resistance, and hope, an anthology edited by @whimsicalaquarian. 🔥
i have been waiting for this book for what seems forever for so many reasons: 💖described as beyoncé’s video and audio masterpiece, lemonade, meets the work of octavia butler, this anthology explores the black experience through fantasy, science fiction and magic. 💖these stories aim to center black women and gender nonconforming individuals.
💖from old timey folktales retold to futuristic settings, this book is sure to capture your imagination and heart.
🔥
also, the list of contributors for this anthology is a staggeringly talented group of black female authors. from elizabeth acevedo to ibi zoboi to amerie, rebecca roanhorse, karen strong and ll mckinney, this is ya’s roster of all-stars. i have tagged all contributing authors in the photo.
🔥
a phoenix first must burn will be on shelves next month (3/10), and is currently available to preorder!
🔥

As the cannabis industry continues to rapidly grow, the number of black business owners entering and making their mark within the industry has climbed as well. this can only be accomplished by learning from those who have blazed the trails for us through this long fight to legalization. with their teachings, guidance and resources, we can begin to our first step in setting our foundation for generational wealth.⠀

jamila hogan ⠀
first black women to manage a cultivation center on the east coast.⠀
@therealjaymills⠀

jamila hogan, publicly known as jay mills, grew the first rounds of 500 plants at the largest facility in dc, abatin wellness center of washington, then matriculated up from seed to sale managing processing, marketing and finally community outreach. jamila observed a need for cannabis education while marketing abatin’s products and in 2016, she founded the green life learning center. courses are led by a collection of cannabis professionals from all over the world, educating consumers and professionals about holistic healing with hemp. an author of several cannabis reference manuals, a series of educational texts that cover the science of cannabis in the body, jamila develops a foundation of understanding botanical archetypes, and cultivation basics. a modern day renaissance woman indeed, jamila currently manages several h**p based brands and businesses, while touring as a motivational speaker and spoken word artist. ⠀

He believed in the power of education and the promise of faith. often teaching himself, he mastered physics, latin, and geometry. at 18, he started his first school. he became an ordained minister, later a bishop in the african methodist episcopal (ame) church, and ultimately, one of the most influential religious leaders in black america. he also made history as the first black president of a us college - wilberforce university.

Travel is about learning new places. few kenyans have been here, understandable because it's far away. 🎆

central islands national park, managed by kws is located in the heart of lake turkana. there are 3 crater lakes inside central islands. the crocodile lake, flamingo lake and fish lake. 🎆

i didn't get to see flamingos as they had migrated elsewhere but the views around are stunning and its a good place to do some low key hiking.

...
the boys painted ceramics yesterday. afterwards i took them to the park.
it was over 50° yesterday, but when you’re sitting still it feels more like 30°. they need to put heat lamps in the park for parents. 50° only feels hot when you are a kid running around.
mid-winter break is over. have a great week everyone.!! #momtoboys #creatememories #kidsloveart

Staying focused is difficult for me. i'm blessed enough to be able to work from home, but i've def had to learn my best working style! working 8 straight hours on one thing doesn't serve me best. i do better working in two or three-hour chunks of time. once i realized that and shifted my work style i found myself getting a lot more done in a lot less time. i def recommend taking a few days to try different working styles and seeing which is your best way to get things done.

Thought it was time for second introductions as i have just passed one hundred followers. i am a newly wed with our second anniversary coming up in march. we met in baltimore and i convinced him to travel halfway across the country with me. we landed in colorado and are hard at work building a foundation here. being adopted and moving frequently throughout my life, while a beautiful and unique journey, led me to not know what it means to be black in america. back in the states, finally as an adult, has been the start of this journey for me. my husband has been instrumental in helping me grow in this way and so gracious kind in my steady but consistent learning curve. i have been discovering my place and part in our growth as the black community. cheers to black love and all that can grow from it! #blacklove #blacklovecouples #blacklovemagic #blackauthor #blackauthors #relationshipgoals #blackcouples #blackcouplegoals #blackcouplerevolution #iwrite #bethechange #onwardsandupward #aftertheaisle #blackexcellence #sharethelove #shareblackstories #shareblacklove #blackfamily #newlyweds
