Can you tell that my morning has been as pretty, bright and beautiful as this plate of semiya upma and coconut chutney?

we went on a picnic yesterday and i had great time, on my first ever picnic what with this beautiful weather and greenery all around. shall post some pictures on ig stories.

Semiya upma 😗 sevaiya is a south indian term used for vermicelli. semiya upmais a variation of the popular and common south indian upmarecipe, using vermicelli instead of semolina.

preparation time: 5 mins  cooking time: 5 mins  total time: 10 mins makes 4 servings

ingredients
for semiya upma
2 cups rice vermicelli (seviyan)
2 1/2 tsp oil
salt to taste
1 tsp mustard seeds ( rai / sarson)
2 tsp urad dal (split black lentils)
1/2 cup finely chopped onions
2 tsp finely chopped green chillies
2 tbsp finely chopped coriander (dhania)
1/2 tbsp lemon juice

for serving with semiya upma
coconut chutney

method
for semiya upma
to make semiya upma, combine the vermicelli, ½ tsp of oil, salt and 2 cups of hot water in a bowl and mix well. cover and keep aside for about 8 to 10 minutes or till the vermicelli turns soft. drain and keep aside.heat the remaining 2 tsp of oil in a broad non-stick pan and add the mustard seeds and urad dal.when the seeds crackle, add the onions and green chillies and sauté on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.add the vermicelli, coriander, lemon juice and a little salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes, while stirring occasionally.serve the semiya upma hot with coconut chutney.

Karnataka style shavige uppittu/semiya upma. it's a very popular south indian breakfast recipe.
i was not a fan of upma in general while growing up, be it rava or vermicelli! but now, i make them almost every weekend, just because i find them very quick and easy to prepare. there are so many semiya upma recipes. the one i make is the simple version of it - just with onions, curry leaves, green chillies and a squeeze of lemon, along with some ghee roasted cashews and pair it with bhujia sev.

ingredients:

vermicelli - 2 cup
carrot - 1 no
shredded coconut - 1/4 cup
oil as required
mustard - 1 tsp
urad dal - 3/4 tsp
chana dal - 1 tabsp
green chilli - 5 no
curry leaves few

turmeric -1/2 tsp

Variety in breakfast is a must.... when you have a husband, who doesn't like repetition.... so made this vermicelli upma..... .

semiya upma or vermicelli upma

vermicelli: 200gm... roast it before making the upma.
heat a pan, pour oil and splutter the mustard seeds first. then, urad dal, cumin seeds, curry leaves and red chillies. after that put a half medium chopped onion and 1/2 inch chopped ginger... stir it well and add your favorite veggies and let it cook for sometime... now add water for boiling ... after the water starts boil, add vermicelli and mix it well.... and close the pan with a lid for cooking.... let the water dry out and add chopped coriander leaves .... serve it hot...

Memory of india #2: my best indian food during the last trip was not curry, but upma, which is made from semolina powder. though upma has wide variety, my favorite is semiya (vermicelli) upma in this picture. it is like japanese somen and really tasty with flavor of indian spices.

layer as below:
2 tbsp oil
1 tbsp mustard seeds
2 tbsp black split urad daal
1 tbsp crushed dry curry leaves
2 chopped green chillies
1 cup chopped purple cabbage
1/2 cup thin sliced carrots
200 gms roasted bambino semiya (full pkt)
1.5 tsp salt
2 cups water
1 cup sliced capsicum/bell peppers

on high for 1 whistle. release pressure. fluff up with fork.

ब्रेकफास्ट आइडिया: सेमिया उपमा (breakfast ideas: semiya upma)
सामग्री
* 2 कप वर्मिसेली (भुनी हुई)
* 1-1 टीस्पून राई और उड़द दाल, आधा टीस्पून हींग
* थोड़े-से करीपत्ते (बारीक़ कटे हुए)
* 1/4-1/4 टीस्पून दालचीनी पाउडर और इलायची पाउडर
* आधा टीस्पून हल्दी पाउडर
* नमक और लाल मिर्च पाउडर स्वादानुसार
* 1-1 प्याज़ और गाजर, 6 फ्रेंचबीन्स और थोड़ा-सा हरा धनिया (चारों बारीक़ कटे हुए), अदरक का 1 टुकड़ा (कद्दूकस किया हुआ)
* 1 टीस्पून शक्कर
* 1 नींबू का रस
* 2 टेबलस्पून तेल
* 1 टेबलस्पून देसी घी
विधि
* पैन में तेल गरम करके राई और हींग का छौंक लगाएं.
* धीमी आंच करके उड़द दाल डालकर सुनहरा होने तक भून लें.
* प्याज़, करीपत्ते और अदरक डालकर 1 मिनट तक भून लें.
* सारी सब्ज़ियां डालकर तेज़ आंच पर क्रंची होने तक भून लें.
* भुनी हुई सेमिया, सारे पाउडर मसाले, शक्कर और नमक मिलाएं. 1 कप पानी डालकर धीमी आंच पर ढंककर 5 मिनट तक पकाएं.
* बीच-बीच में चलाते हुए वर्मिसेली के नरम होने तक पकाएं.

tbh i have a love-hate relationship with ragi semiya.
its bearable for me with curd or buttermilk.
we won a bunch of ragi, wheat, white flour semiyas & other ragi stuff in a kolam competition conducted by utv and dinamalar 😃
its a never ending pile.😅 most of the products were from narasu's coffee brand. i liked all the wheat based one. ragi ones i take with a pinch of salt 😝 best to be had as breakfast.

Quick, tasty and nutritious savory breakfast option!
moong sprouts and grape tomatoes semiya/vermicelli upma (start to finish 10 mins)

1 in ip turn on the sauté mode. (have used instant p*t to cook this. you can use stove top pressure cooker).
2 add oil. once heated, add mustard seeds, urad and chana dhal, cumin seeds, curry leaves, chopped green chilies and chopped ginger.
3 add roasted semiya, salt and mix well.
4 add water just enough to cover the semiya.
5 add tomatoes and them the moong sprouts (do not mix).
6 cover the ip and turn on pressure cook (3 mins on high). ensure to turn off keep warm button.
7 once done, let it rest for 5-6 mins and then release the pressure, open the lid, mix well and enjoy! traditional upma is made with semoline and is a popular south indian breakfast. in this recipe switch semolina with semiya(vermicelli).

semiya is made with rice, soy or wheat. in this recipe mystic_pan has used wheat semiya. semiya is rich in protein and iron . semiya is f*t and cholesterol free. .
recipe: 1 cup toasted semiya, 10-12 ghee roasted cashew, 1 cup chopped onions , 4 slit green chillies, 1 tsp mustard seeds, pinch of turmeric, chopped coriander and salt per taste.
process: boil water and put semiya and cook it for 5 mins or until it is done 75%. remove from water immediately and rinse in cold water and set aside.
heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow it to splutter. add green chillies, onion and turmeric. saute until done. add semiya, ghee roasted cashew , salt and corriander. mix it thoroughly and cook it for few mins and serve it hot! .
