nonstick cooking spray
2½ cups cooked quinoa
8 large eggs, lightly beaten
¾ cup reduced-fat (2%) cottage cheese (or part-skim ricotta)
4 cups raw spinach
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
½ cup finely chopped basil
sea salt (or himalayan salt) and ground black pepper (to taste; optional)

heat oven to 375° f.
lightly coat 9x12-inch baking dish with spray. set aside.
combine quinoa, eggs, cottage cheese, spinach, tomatoes, and basil in a large bowl; mix well. season with salt and pepper, if desired.
pour quinoa mixture into baking dish. bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Fatigue - spoon theory

the spoon theory is a story by christine miserandino. the theory is a helpful way to understand the fatigue experienced by individuals with chronic illness, depression, acute stress or strong anxiety. units of energy are described as “spoons”, which are finite and easily used up without adequate self care.

according to the theory, the difference between being unwell and healthy is having to make choices or to consciously think about your energy use. to have to carefully consider how to use the 10 spoons in your drawer, rather than assuming you always have more energy/spoons to use. for the most part, healthy individuals do not need to worry about the effects of their actions on their energy reserves.
for people with fatigue issues, especially those related to chronic illness, having depleted and low reserves of energy can effect all aspects of daily functioning. being fatigued effects mood, coping, thinking processes (see my post: foggy brain), work ability and productivity, ability to socialise... the list goes on unfortunately.

understanding and empathetically supporting people with fatigue is helpful. it is not laziness, can be extremely frustrating and can detrimentally effect self esteem and confidence. if you suffer from fatigue issues, sharing this story may assist others to understand your experience with greater empathy and compassion.

Thyroid and mood

our mood is intertwined with all of our hormones. many people present to psychologists with untreated thyroid hormone issues. the thyroid gland is part of the endocrine system, which secretes regulatory hormones into the blood. the thyroid sits just below the larnyx and has two lobes, one on either side of the windpipe. this gland controls many vital metabolic processes, such as growth and energy expenditure. thyroid issues are common & can make you feel tired & contribute to anxiety &/or depression.

hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid & symptoms include: pale skin, fatigue, weakness, weight gain or difficulty losing weight, coarse, dry hair, dry, rough pale skin, hair loss, cold intolerance, frequent muscle aches, constipation, depression, irritability, memory loss, abnormal menstrual cycles & decreased libido. hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disease & a common cause of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). immune system cells attack the thyroid gland, causing inflammation & it's destruction.

hyperthyroidism is an overactive thyroid & symptoms include: accelerated heart rate or palpitations, muscle weakness and trembling, unexplained weight loss, sensitivity to heat, diarrhoea, sleeping difficulties, sweating, irritability, nervousness, agitation & anxiety, changes in m**********n (scantier flow & increased cycle length). if you are symptomatic, you should speak to your dr to get your thyroid hormones checked. a quick blood test and an ultrasound are needed for a thorough diagnosis. your mood should stabilise once you are treated appropriately.

every person suffering with mental health issues has a unique experience - different physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms that range in severity. a common problem is rumination - the focused attention on the symptoms of your distress, with thoughts spinning around unhelpfully, escalating emotions and tension.

when a person ruminates, he/she aims to answer questions such as: .
๐ŸŒธ how do i feel about this event?
๐ŸŒธ how can i change my thoughts and feelings about the event?
๐ŸŒธhow can i prevent disturbing thoughts and feelings in the future?

in pondering such questions repeatedly, ruminators tend to focus on their emotions (i.e., "self-referent information") as opposed to problem solving (i.e., "goal-directed action"). rumination is often a repetitious waste of time, stressful and anxiety provoking. if this is a problem for you, seeking psychological intervention will likely prove beneficial.

Coping with stress

this photo taken on a camping trip earlier this year reminds me of how important it is to slow down and be mindful.
as a psychologist, i often meet clients with high stress levels, juggling too many tasks and obligations. at times, this is a collision of circumstances and coping strategies need to be implemented to get through.
sometimes, the overload is the result of saying yes excessively, people pleasing, poor time management, disorganisation, or psychological issues. if this is the case, it can be helpful to seek treatment to assist you to find balance, build skills and make changes to improve your wellbeing.
