Gdcv1007 hong kong cinema and hong kong culture is a ge course offered by the academy of film in which local and exchange students from different disciplines used their own angles and perspectives to interview "kaifong" in the yau ma tei neighbourhood about their perception on hk cinema and their moviegoing experience. some of these interviewees were then invited to a free community screening of cheuk cheung’s bamboo theatre on 6 nov held in broadway cinematheque, which is also located in ymt. one of the aims of this service-learning project is to witness how more people in the neighbourhood can get the chance to share the cultural resources of the community.
there was a mini-party reception before the screening where hkbu students reunited and mingled with the service users they invited. the screening was then followed by a discussion session where the filmmaker was invited on stage to dialogue with dr timmy chen, the course instructor and answer very smart and sensible questions from our students. cisl director ms cindy chan, vptl dr albert chau, and director and assistant director of the general education office prof chiu sung nok and dr lisa lam attended the event together with mr clarence tsui, director of broadway cinematheque, and they all agree that it is a meaningful and memorable occasion.

Students from perm 3016 fitness and recreation for selected population visited sage wong wha san memorial neighbourhood elderly centre on 8 oct. they conducted fitness assessments and designed unique fitness plans for muscles strengthening and increasing flexibility for each elderly, and a one-month exercise challenge was assigned to them.
they revisited the elderly centre on 5 nov and conducted post-tests to measure the elderly’s muscle strength and flexibility. “i can’t be lazy when you are staring at me!” said one of the elderly when conducting a 2-minute knee lift test. students followed up with them to assess their health status and review their exercise skills, and reinforced the importance of staying active.

Inspired by “crisp air in mountains and lakes”, a famous painting created by huang binhong, one of the great masters of the last century, the new installation “crisp air in a bamboo grove” by dr koon wai-bong, an assistant professor from the hkbu academy of visual arts, invites viewers to saunter into a bamboo grove and experience the pleasures of the crisp air contained within. commissioned by the hong kong museum of art (hkmoa), the stunning artwork was showcased in the museum’s reopening ceremony on 30 october after a three-year closure due to the renovation and restructuring of the space.

candace chong, five-time winner of hong kong drama awards (best script), is renowned for constructing in-depth characterization and intense conflicts between characters. she doesn’t confine her works to one particular theme for they always come across discussion of humanity, romance and social ideologies: alive in the mortuary (2002), the french kiss (2005), m****r in san josé (2009) and the wild boar (2012), among others. her famed television drama, my very short marriage (2017) digs deep into love and the pain of marriage and was later adapted into a play in 2019. /
this year, cultural literacy programme co-presents “star chat” with young friends of the hong kong arts festival. candace chong will meet with the moderator, dr tong yui from department of humanities and creative writing, to share her struggling and joyous moments as a playwright, as well as the creative process of her latest play we are g*y (2020) commissioned and produced by the hong kong arts festival. she will also talk about how we can respond to society through theatre.

The faculty of arts is hosting "the age of robots" exhibition by the french artist yves gellie from 31 october to 16 november. the exhibition will feature videos and photographs in the context of an exploration into the use of humanoid robots in the situations associated with human vulnerability.

moreover, the exhibition, together with the "robot empathy and human vulnerability" forum to be held on 2 november, will explore aspects of the important field of social robotics, with a strong emphasis on artificial and human empathy. there will be a live performance by kay tse of a new song with lyric written by dr chow yiu-fai, voicing out the inner world of a robot. 🤖

Always, it's not easy for me to run 10 km on the treadmill in the morning because of not good enough sleep, but gym is my life @hkbaptistu. i still try to run as much as i can (10 km challenge) during my gym either on weekend or sunday.
it's very hard for me to complete a 10 km run when i am not very good rhythm and shape, but i have finished it in 54 minutes. i'm satisfied. let's hope for better rhythm and shape next time.
besides, eating the protein / energy bar - my favorite black sesame almond bar of @suphias.functional.foods is very significant to me because it helps refresh me so much within a very short time.

Dr. kenneth chan's course, pols2007 introduction to research methods, demands students to advance inclusive governance by addressing persistent concerns about electoral integrity in hong kong and exploring effective ways to promote gender issues and related policy ideas in the district council election through vigorous research methods they have learned. for instance, students will collect data about female candidates, conduct interviews, and explore the gender dynamics in various districts and communities and gender mainstreaming in the society at large.
to let students have better preparation, a workshop was held last week to brief and introduce hkbu students and other participants from the general public about the basics of fair elections, international standards, and democracy as a whole. the workshop was well attended with over 100 people, in which both local and international participants exchanged their ideas and viewpoints. our students are ready to observe a fair district council election on 24 nov 2019 -- are you? 🧐

Sat pak-long, an elite athlete from the new cohort of elite athletes admission scheme (eaas) students and a member of the hong kong wushu team, won one silver medal and two bronze medals at the 3rd world taijiquan championships last year. “i am now planning to participate in the asian championships next year. the liberal academic vibe and flexible programme at hkbu allows me to focus on both training and studying.” he said. hkbu has enrolled 12 students through eaas this year. it is the first time that rowing and volleyball athletes have been recruited to hkbu under this scheme. http://bit.ly/2monnjm

healthy routine and people were so grateful for the lessons i gave. i have amazing parents who
were really supportive during this time - my father even insisted i would show him some of my
moves. so leaving all of this behind was really hard but i understood that it was what i had to
do; i feel like i can really grow as a person here. there are many things for me - and i can still
do zumba; i have already organised a workout for my classmates. it’s been a crazy busy year,
but i have never felt better - it’s the good kind of busy, the one that makes you feel alive.”
