such a delicate delight to grow in my garden. the more you pick the more they grow, just like calendula and chamomile. i have been nibbling on these and slowly gathering enough to tincture.
this is my go to herb for children's skin conditions and for all ages eczema. especially good for weeping eczema and combines well with red clover, cleavers and nettle. i might use it topically in a cream as well as part of an internal tincture mix.
a cooling, mucilaginous herb that has diuretic, expectorant, mild laxative and alterative properties.
i also use this herb in respiratory conditions such as whooping cough, bronchitis and general coughs and sore throats.
plus, energetically it will often end up in the mixes of my heartbroken patients. it is called heartsease after all 😍

Whether as part of a hedge, a wind swept bush or a magnificent tree, hawthorns are one of my all time favourite trees. the heady, scented blossom at the beginning of may and the scarlet berries heralding the autumn and providing winter food for wildlife. as if that wasn’t enough, nature just piles on more. the hawthorn is packed full of goodness. in ancient times every part of the tree, the flowers, berries, leaves, stems and bark were used for medicine. it is full of antioxidants and fantastic for the heart and lowering blood pressure. try adding some of the young leaves to your salads. today i made some hawthorn syrup which will be used as a treat on pancakes or just about anything. it’s very easy to make. 1 cup of berries simmered 5 minutes in 3 cups water. strained through muslin then 1 cup of honey added. keep in a bottle in the fridge for up to 3 months - simple! #morethanagarden #foraginghedgerows #hedgerowmedicine #foraginguk #sacredseedsherbalproject

I've been straining the elderberry tincture i made...... all 4.5 litres of this essential medicine. squeezing with my hands this delicious juicy antioxidant rich medicine. my hands were stained purple by the end.
it was a good year for elderberries which was a relief as last year there was hardly any.
an absolute strong hold in our winter wellness home herbal traditions, these anti-viral berries dangle abundantly from our hedgerows.
i do need to add a note of caution for those new to foraging, as i've know a lot of people to pick the wrong berries and be quite ill. know your plants folks!
this tincture will be one ingredient in an immune boosting blend that is going out in the next herb box.
if you'd like to reserve your seasonal medicines herb box, delivered to your door all over the uk see the link in my bio for more info.
check out my stories to see my request: can you help me spread my work to reach the masses and help others learn how to be self sufficient with their health needs through herbs ..... felt scary to ask but i've done it anyway ..... please tag a friend whom you think may enjoy my educational feed. thanks in advance

Who else is addicted to oxymels??? i have been a little obsessed about using apple cider vinegar as a menstrum for many years now. having its own hoard of health benefits, it is also perfectly suited for kids, elderly and others where maybe an alcoholic tincture would not be. i use mine as my main #wintertonic and have a variety to choose from for different conditions. i was so glad to share my passion for the #humble #oxymel in the herb box and recently @naturalfitnesscentre in eastbourne. a lot of lovely folks shared my enthusiasm!

I am so grateful to be able to practice herbal medicine from this 'back to nature' location. being in a wooden structure with a fire burning, passing on some foraging tips from the 'weeds' that are just on the doorstep. it just feels right.
if you know of anyone who is looking to increase their wellbeing or deal with current diagnoses in a natural way in the east #sussex vicinity, please pass on my details. i have more time in the winter months to take on new patients, whereas i often turn people away in the summer as all the outdoor workshops and education side of my work becomes full time, i can only keep up with follow up apts and the occasional initial consult. i take a really long time for initial consults, about 1.5-2hr with the patient, then several hours researching their herbal health program and sending them notes and action plans. i love diving into a case, often going on many tangents as the research is so interesting.

Oh what a beauty....
the generous pine tree is offering up its nutritious pine pollen. pine pollen has over 200 bioavailable nutrients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and natural phyto-androgens (dhea, testosterone, androstenedione and androsterone) in one single serving. it aids in the excretion of excess estrogens and speeds up our metabolism to help burn off excess f*t and it can also increase our s*x drive and libido.
pine pollen really is a super food! and grows in abundance near me in ashdown forest. when i harvest the pollen buds i also harvest some needles as well as they often come off naturally.
pine needles are antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungal. they can help clear phlegm and congestion in our respiratory tracts and are super rich in vit c. in the old days it has been known that pine needle tea has kept scurvy away in individuals in super cold countries where snow and ice keep other food sources at bay.
i have infused the pollen buds and needles in apple cider vinegar with a gentle simmer to break open to tough cell walls of the pollen to make the nutrients available for our bodies. this is one of the plants that feature in my spring mineral rich vinegar blend in my recent herb box along with nettle, cleavers and dandelion leaves and flowers. i have to say the spring vinegar is one of my fav products, so jam packed with plant goodness and alive with cleansing and nutritive properties. 👆🏼link in my bio to find out more about my herb boxes if you'd like to grab one... #pinepollen #foraging #wildfoodlove #wildfood #wildnutrition #pinelove #springherbs #springmedicine #herbbox #sacredseedsherbalproject #sussex #ashdownforest #springvibes

Did you see smoke today out in the sacred seeds meadow and wonder "what on earth..."? we had a good reason! while full of pnw medicinal plants, the meadow was also home to invasive weeds and we wanted to simulate a healthy fire that might cull out weeds and keep those native plants that would traditionally rejuvenate after a burn. some even germinate better from seed after a fire! it also creates ashy plant matter, which is high in potassium, and if we're lucky a natural form of charcoal, all of which will contribute toward improving the soil microbiology and making it more conducive to growing more of our meadow plants. and lastly... burning weeds with a propane torch is maybe a little bit fun. 😉

I've been enjoying my work as a herbalist a lot lately. i seem to naturally get busier with my private practice and patients as i have more time in the cooler months. i've been enjoying delving into the case studies and watching their heath improve as our herbal treatment progresses. i've also been busy foraging the autumn berries and seeds and making medicines.
plus..... i've been planning the next herb box. it's going to be a reflection of the incredible abundance at this time of year.
the next herb box will be out on 21st october. there are very limited numbers now that the herb box subscription is filling up.

i'm am very proud of what this next box will contain. all products that i use myself and absolutely love.
go on grabs yours now!!
oh and i also love the mushroom which is upon us. it's very satisfying to forage for your own food...... but make sure of your 200% positive id

This autumn the changing of the seasons is bringing forth a pretty big shift for me and my husband.
we're in the process of moving out of our barn-sit and into a caravan back on my parents farm. i've been having a mass clean out of all of my 'stuff' and it feels so good to be getting rid of a significant amount. the process of moving is enabling me to set up an area dedicated to my herbal dispensary which will be great to finally have it all in one place and out of boxes. we'll have a fair amount of work to do to insulate the caravan for winter but we're also pretty hardy and like to have fresh air circulating all year.
im feeling pretty positive about the move and reflecting how change often creates room for growth. while i'm onsite there i will be able to expand the workshops i offer and run regular garden volunteer days.
i'm feeling the pull of the winter dream time.... hibernation time is looming and the gradual decline of my workload is kicking in slowly. nesting in our caravan while planning and sowing seeds of intention for the next years to come....
this photo of me was taken on our camping holiday in wales right next to our campsite.

It's been an autumnal foraging frenzy few days.... my hands and fingernails are stained purple! i had so much fun foraging with an old friend for a good few hours. two baskets plus a plastic bag full of elderberries. the picking is the easy part... then triple that time to quantify how long it takes to process. my trick is to use a fork to scrape the berries off the stems. pick off any green, unripe or bad berries first. discard stem and any leaves that have found their way into your harvest into your compost.
about 1:3 people have a sort of reaction to eating raw elderberries; vomiting and stomach pains normally. so i advise to always process them, which does not necessarily means cooking them. i infuse in apple cider vinegar, mash together, wait for 4wks then strain. i also make tinctures with v***a and dehydrate berries to save for tea.
i freeze some too to keep for syrup making for when the winter lurgies strike.
elderberry tonics in any form your choose are such a good ally for keeping us healthy, fighting viruses and boosting our system with antioxidants.
be sure to have 100% positive id on your elder berries as there are other berries out there that look similar which are not edible or medicinal.
happy foraging friends

I can't tell you how happy i am in my garden. it's totally overgrown with weeds.... f*t hen, dock and sadly some bindweed too. i haven't had time to keep ontop of it all lately esp after being away on hols.
i've come back to harvest's of these violets and yarrow, plus lemon balm, chamomile and pennyroyal. late summer flowers ready to tincture and dry while all the berries are ripe early this year too so it seems the autumn abundance is upon us.
have you used viola tricolor as medicine before? it's a very special plant indeed.

such a beautiful and delicate flower. i grow this for the root harvest to use as a coffee substitute and also to make flower essence.
this is the bach flower remedy for unconditional love.
if someone's love is conditional, if they are controlling, seek attention and need to be continuously assured of the family's love.... this is the remedy for them. the feeling of unworthiness prevents this personality from being able to give love to itself so constantly seeks love from others.
once brought into balance through taking this remedy (and potentially a lot of councelling), the chicory personality has the potential for great inner strength and a strong ability to love unconditionally. ------------------------

A gorgeous patch of my garden with the evergreen thyme in flower and some self seeded motherwort. i've been planting out lots of sunflowers, squash and lots of other herbs today. so many of the herbs will be in full bloom soon, the summer harvests are starting to ramp up.
i started planning for the july herb box today, looking at what plants will become potential good harvests and what is inspiring me at this time. mulling over what health benefits we will be needing during the busy height of summer.
i have been planning up until next springs box already. i often make potion blends, tinctures and tonics through the year and so i do already have a few delectable products that have been added to, refined and will go into the july box. i love this creative process

Have you ever made a tea from the white hawthorn blossoms and green leaves and watch the tea turn this deep red colour?
hawthorn has been used medicinally for centuries, and i often hear people mostly talking of the berries, with their deep red colour and starchy bulk they would have been an important food source for our ancestors. i personally feel that the stronger medicine is in the blossoms and leaves when harvested at this time of year. as you can see by the colour of this tea the blossoms and leaves contain significant amounts of the antioxidants which contribute to our cardiovascular health. it would be the blossoms and leaf tincture that i would use to reduce blood pressure and use as preventative measures for angina and atherosclerosis. although, my preference would always be to use a combined tincture of the blossoms, leaf and berries. so i will tincture the blossoms and leaves now and strain when the berries are ripe in the autumn and use that same menstrum/liquid to infuse the berries.

Have you joined the bitter revolution yet... from the medicine cabinet to the bar, bitters have a long history of curing ailments and flavouring drinks. herbalist jim mcdonald writes "i am a firm believer in bitter deficiency syndrome; a notion that posits that much of the health woes faced by modern folk has at its root a lack of bitter flavour in the diet; and that many of the digestive problems for which we see bitters as a 'remedy' are actually symptoms of deficiency of this flavour. perhaps it is not right to think that bitters should be used to threat sluggish digestion, but that a lack of bitter flavour in one's diet can be a cause of sluggish digestion. perhaps many of the conditions calling for bitter as a remedy arise from their omission, not unlike rickets arises from lack of vit d"
our ancestors would have eaten a whole spectrum of flavours that we now have lost along with their nutritional benefits.
here is a photo of the wild medicine day i ran for @schoolofthewild
each participant made their own individual bitter combinations to take home.
if you would like to learn more about how to make and use bitters you can sign up for my spring herb box and receive a ready made bitter combo plus all of the literature to learn more. plus additional herbal delights including a spring tonic with nettle, cleavers and ground ivy and a spring wild greens sprinkle with wild garlic, chickweed, nettle, oregano, lemon thyme and parsley. 👆🏽link in my bio

i gathered two extra large bags full of this abundant wild food. it took 3 full loads in the dehydrator (6 trays in each load), and once dried and processed it weighed a meagre 270g. i touched on this issue in my stories recently. a seriously large amount of fresh plant material is needed to make say powders and capsules, teas, and food sprinkles. this is why quite a few other small batch suppliers and growers do not offer such products. it is simply not viable. you need a large space to grow them and a proper mid-sized industrial drying space. my small dehydrator is on most days from now until august..... and one day soon i hope to upscale my productivity and processes.
i am not able to be completely self sufficient as of yet with the ingredients for the herb box as such a large quantity is needed for the dried products. i buy in from other organic herb suppliers to top up.
this wild garlic will be going into a spring nutritional sprinkle combined with parsley, lemon thyme, oregano, nettle leaf and chickweed. sound good or what?! you can sign up to receive your herb box and find out more by clicking the link in my bio.
