if you’ve suffered a leg or knee injury, it can be hard to get back out there and exercise 🏃. a new form of exercise device is helping injured people learn to run again.

the glidecycle is built in the shape of a bike 🚲 but has no pedals. it uses a suspension system to support the pelvis. this reduces 📉 any impact on the lower part of the body and provides a pain-free experience 👍. it may look a little difficult to get the hang of but the company reckons it takes the average person only 20 minutes 🕠 to learn. the weightless bike can currently be bought for $1,649.

Most people are performing lat pull downs incorrectly. it’s a more technical exercise that it first appears. follow this tutorial and i’m 💯 sure you will notice a huge difference... and have those lats screaming rather than your biceps!

Morning routine ☀️

for some it’s drinking coffee for me it’s 15 minute of movement before starting the day. 15 minutes of cars and other stuff i feel like.
i do them daily, on most days more then once - especially days like today on which i don’t get a lot of different movement in except for hiking.
cars and the morning routine have changed my perspective and awareness for movement to the better! digging into this spectrum of mobility (& movement) has been one of the best decision i’ve made in the last couple years.

What physical activities do you enjoy?

i love to play golf. i love to go on long hikes. i love to ski. hell i love all forms of physical activity and adventure.

if i had to give anything up because of a wrecked low back, chronic shoulder pain or stiff, immobile joints, i would be devastated. i’m sure you would be too.
.
this brings me to my point - in the future, you’ll be less concerned with how you look, and more concerned with how you feel and how you body performs.
.
now i totally understand the desire to get in good physical shape. but this does not have to come at the expense of your physical health.
.
train smart and take a balanced approach to fitness.
.
build lean muscle & strength by weight training in a functional way. prioritize free weights not machines. train movement patterns over muscles.
.
build your engine with a combination of liss & hiit.
.
maintain your joint health with regular movement & mobility work.
.
this is going to allow you to build your best body and you’ll be rewarded with physical freedom too 🙏

Oldie but goodie...
.
there are 3 fundamental movement patterns for the legs that you should be training:
🔹the squat
🔹the lunge
🔹the hinge.
.
the hinge is the pattern that most people have the hardest time learning. but it’s also the most beneficial from an overall health, performance and aesthetic standpoint 🍑👀
.
with that said, here are 3 tips to help master one of the best hinge pattern exercises - the romanian deadlift:
.
1️⃣ rotate your thighs outwards...also think about gripping the ground with your feet. this external rotation force will stabilize the hips which is essential to solid technique.
.
2️⃣ db’s at a 45 degree angle and glued to your legs. this is a strong and stable position for the shoulders and will help you to engage your lats on the lowering phase - keeping you strong and stable.
.
3️⃣ tuck your butt! when you transition from the bottom position to standing, don’t just think about standing up. think about tucking your hips / tailbone. this will maximize the contraction of the glutes 👌

This exercise will challenge your shoulder muscles right at their end range, where they are weakest.
.
strengthening this position will improve your overhead mobility and help to offset rounded shoulder posture.
.
✅ how it’s done.
🔹start in a tall kneeling position - knees, hips, shoulders in a straight line. spine neutral. core braced.
🔹hands behind head. dont arch your back.
🔹pinch shoulder blades. pull elbows back and hover hands just off the head. freeze.
🔹now, straighten elbows to form a y position. keeping the arms as far back behind your body as possible. freeze.
🔹bend the elbows and place the hands as low down your head as you can before making contact and relaxing the elbows.
🔹repeat 3 reps. 3 rounds.
.
✅ when.
🔹as part of a training session or at your desk. aim for twice a week.
.

Build bigger, healthier shoulders by hammering the rear delts in a functional way.
.
exercise name: bent over rear delt raises.
.
✅ how it’s done.
🔹grab a light pair of db’s - these are 4kg fyi!
🔹hinge at the hips until the chest is nearly parallel w/ the floor and the back is flat.
🔹raise the db’s with a slight elbow bend until they are in-line with your ears.
🔹pause for a split second.
🔹lower under control and repeat.
.
✅ reps / sets.
🔹3 sets of 15 reps. 60 second rest between sets.
.
📝 never accept less than stellar technique and keep your ego in check. this is key to pain-free gains and your lifting longevity

it is ongoing thing /years of neglecting/ that is from time to time coming back, based on stress or different factors.🤷🏼‍♂️⠀

we spent 20minutes working on in. ⠀
re-distributing tension, displacing displacement and basically just doing training the right way. 👍🏻⠀

we did all of these in more-less intense work, with simple focus of doing it right way. ⠀
it was training. no massage, no elastic bands, no 1-2kg plates.⠀

she did it. all by herself, i just pointed to direction where to go.⠀

proper training giving all the results, smiles, good night sleep and happy clients.⠀

The good morning.

this exercise has always been a firm favorite of mine. it strengthens the entire posterior chain, helps to bullet proof the low back and has a huge carry over to the squat and deadlift.
.
many people are frightened to program this exercise through fear of hurting their low back. performed with solid technique, it’s going to do the opposite and make the low back more resilient to injury (and did i mention grow your glutes and hams!? 🍑 💪)
.
that said, you absolutely must have a dialed in hip hinge pattern before attempting.
.
if you do, try programming this as one of your ‘hinge pattern’ exercises in your next block of training. start light and build up the load as you gain confidence.
.
think of it as an almost identical exercise to the rdl (romanian deadlift). the only real difference is the placement of the bar.
.

Core training vs ab training
.
ab training is generally sit ups, crunches and stuff like that. people b**g out rep after rep in hopes of toning their stomachs (impossible since you cannot spot reduce) and they think it’s some magical muscle that you can workout everyday. you can’t.
.
your core has 3 main functions. which are anti lateral flexion, anti rotation and anti extension. unlike sit ups and crunches, exercises in those categories will have much more carryover to everyday life.
.
you’ll have less injuries, be less beat up and strengthen your low back and overall do a lot of great things for your body.
.
this exercise is the anti rotation chop. key jer is to keep the hips square throughout the movement. this will make sure you’re resisting the rotation, which is the whole point of the exercise.
.
.
side note. treat core training like anything else. aim to get stronger over time. doing the same reps everyday will get you nowhere fast. train them. rest them. train them again.

Functional hamstring curl progressions.
.
this exercise is incredible for strengthening the hamstrings, protecting your knees, and boosting athletic performance.
.
this is a very tough exercise, so level 1 is absolutely by no means ‘easy’. but assuming you can knock out a few perfect reps, here’s how you would progress;
.
level 1: 2 leg.
📝 make sure that your hips are extended throughout the exercise. there should be a straight line between the shoulders, hips and knees, always.
.
level 2: 2 up 1 down.
📝 use 2 legs to assist you to the top and lower under control with 1 leg. complete desired reps this way. rest and repeat on the other side.
.
level 3: single leg.
📝 very hard. master level 2 first. make sure that your hip is extended throughout the exercise. there should be a straight line between the shoulders, hips and knees, always.

"training through multiple planes of motion is a must. in particular, being able to move with strength and power through the frontal plane (side-to-side) is essential for anyone who plans on being a human being outside of the gym. the lateral sled drag is essential since it's one of the only exercises that combines dynamic frontal plane movement with the ability to add meaningful load. ⁣

here's why it's so valuable:⁣

it trains single-leg strength in a lateral fashion. frontal plane exercises like lateral lunges are great, but they involve zero movement through actual space. lateral sled drags, on the other hand, train frontal plane single-leg strength in a dynamic fashion, and thus provide an entirely different training stimulus.⁣

it targets "hard-to-reach" muscles. there's a huge hip internal/external rotation component, which is hard to duplicate with load. likewise, it's one of the few ways to build strength in both the adductors and abductors without using emasculating machines or schlepping through side-lying clams.⁣

it's a dynamic anti-rotation core challenge. think of the pallof press, an anti-rotation exercise, performed in a dynamic manner. this challenges the core more effectively than other dynamic core movements (like russian twists) without placing undue stress on the spine.⁣

it's a knee and hip-friendly alternative. this is especially important for those with pain/injury. since there's no rapid deceleration involved, the lateral sled drag is an effective alternative to other frontal plane exercises for people with tricky lower-body joints."⁣

When i was younger (yesterday), if i had an ailment, i would hop onto web md, to quickly find out my short spell of dizziness, was in fact a brain tumour. of course, web md was wrong but now my dizziness was accompanied by anxiety, panic and the belief there was something wrong with me. .
.
instagram for fitness is like web md. ‘science’ is the new marketing craze and ‘dysfunction’ its most recent trope. while for coaches who have been pushing for facts to be taken more seriously than fads for years, this is certainly an exciting time. for our clients/the majority of people, the ramifications of consistent access to bite size and often generalised information, that counts the ways in which our bodies may be dysfunctional are not so good.

.
thinking back to before i had ever weight-trained and carried a lot more f*t than i do now, my knowledge was low and my insecurities high. i already didn’t believe that i could ever be strong, lose f*t or live in a body i liked. it was only through wearing blinkers to the things that could stop me and focussing on the ways i could succeed and believing i could be great at them, that led me to where i am now. that was before instagram became what it is. if i had access to constant information telling me the way my body moved wasn’t good enough, it’s very likely that i would have not moved my body at all. .
.
information can led to overwhelm; overwhelm can lead to inaction.
.
that’s not to say, that this information isn’t needed and appreciated but i do think there has to be a stronger emphasis on two points

1. there is no ‘perfect’ body, as functional looks different on everyone however, if you’re struggling to move without pain, rely on the assessment of professionals not on instagram to tell you what’s going on. otherwise you’ll just end up like me on web md.
2. it is our job as coaches to coach. part of that means tempering how we put information out into the world for the benefit of those who learn from us. remembering there is a big gap between what we know as coaches and what the majority of people know and understanding that if you are in a position of influence, your words can lead to inaction as much as action.

all without pain that previously was there from 2011.
by her own words: “ yea, 2013 was worst year ever, i also fractured my hip.” loads of running and some functional fitnessing into it, done for fun snd joy turned into selfsabotaging workouts... well, you know... what is importat is that se are on the right track now.

4 of these open workouts contained pressing movement overhead, or overhead stabilization. all done painfree with extremly happy smiles afterwards :) im not prticulary knows for being emotional about things, however, this got me hard.

when was the last time you actually enjoyed and trully loved your workouts and trainings?

there is a right way to do it and we are on it.

Not sure if you should train? ask yourself these 5 questions.

1)how is my immune system health? do i have a cold or fever, is my grip strength weaker than normal? have i underslept by a noticable amount? if yes to any of these at best you will not perform well and at worst it is unsafe. go very light or take the day off.
2)how is my gut health?
am i uncomfortably bloated right now? (you will have trouble bracing effectively). go light or take the day off.
3)how much time in the week do you have?
if you skip today do you have enough time in the week to complete the amount of workouts you are supposed to?
if yes skipping is okay, if no then you need to train today.
4)are you sore? most discomfort can be made better with appropriate intensity exercise. go lighter if need be.
5)do i feel like it? do you normally feel like it? if you normally love training then your body is trying to you something. take the day off.

bonus question: is life legitimately in the way? is there a sick family member, unexpected home repairs, and any other emergency situation? take the day off.

🤯what an insane and surreal weekend at @saganfondogranroadieoh! thank you so much to @the_vegan_cyclist for the opportunity to join the vip dinner and meet the legends @petosagan and zabel!

the ride was straight 🔥! rode with @petosagan at the front on and off for 2.5 hours and got to talk about training, riding in big groups of sketchy fondo racers and dad-life!

🕺🏻highlight of the ride? descending full-gas down a crazy technical hill behind the 3-time world champ himself! 😧i’m ruined. there will never be a better wheel to follow. i can retire now.

The adductors 🔥💪🏋🏼‍♀️ the adductors (big masses of tissue on the inside of the thigh) are like a forgotten to return library book📚in that they are often forgotten about or ignored until you have a significant fine💰to pay.

we often focus on strengthening💪 and working on the muscles of the neighbouring hamstring and quads, but neglect to focus on the adductors.

healthy adductors are responsible for stabilizing your back and pulling your knees back to centre when rising from a squat. they also work hard to stabilize your body laterally when standing on one leg.

if the tissues of the adductors are stiff and short you are going to have a hard time getting your knees out when you squat🏋🏼‍♀️. if you want to decrease back or knee pain, improve your squat or prevent injury try addressing the adductor tissues with this technique using a barbell.

Separation anxiety? dogs with separation anxiety may view you leaving the house as a bad/unsettling thing, however there are ways in which to change their way of thinking. instead it’s important they see you leaving as a good thing ☝🏻blondie used to freak out and scratch the door to a point where the wood was exposed. to combat this, i now leave a special treat jar by the door. this way she knows she will get a treat if she is calm and relaxed. (in the beginning a kong toy or chew-bone will keep your dogs occupied and take their mind off the separation!) it’s all about being consistent!

progress isn’t always measured in pounds lost/gained or other measurements👇

for me, a subtle marker or progress is any alterations in my mood🙃
👉 how do i feel going to my workouts?
👉 how do i feel during and after my workouts?
👉 how do i feel on my days off?
👉 how do i feel about grocery shopping and meal prepping? -
obviously the main marker of progress is increases in performance in your activity or weight loss/gain for body composition

but there’s so much more to it. this type of progress is result based. other types of improvements (such as mood) are, to me, processed based. by improving your process, you are inevitably going to improve your results🙌

in order to improve my training, i need to add 2 cycling workouts to my weeks. i will obviously monitor what i do on the bike and track my performance on it. but the most important to me in the following weeks is how am i going to react to adding 2 (pretty boring) workouts to my week?

if i find that i’m not excited about it, or that it drains my energy, or that it interferes too much with my day to day life, i’ll look to modify it so that i do get excited about it, it does give me more energy 😁

✅ most shoulder-friendly press in existence?⁣

⏩ the dumbbell floor press with @fatgripz is arguably the most shoulder-friendly press in existence. if conventional bench pressing makes your shoulders act up, there are four primary reasons why the db floor press might be your saving grace:⁣

1️⃣ it’s hard to s***w up. the bottom position of the floor press (when the elbows hit the ground) is essentially risk-free. compare that to the bottom position of the conventional bench press where a number of potential issues can occur: bouncing the bar off your chest, flaring the elbows out excessively, going too low too rapidly, hanging out on your joints and tendons, etc. pair poor execution with an at-risk position, and things can get ugly pretty quickly.⁣

2️⃣ the floor press limits the range of motion slightly by stopping the elbows just above the potential danger zone, a position that often creates or exacerbates shoulder issues in plenty of banged up lifters. by limiting the bottom range, there’s less of a stretched extension and internal rotation placed on the glenohumeral joint, which reduces anterior shoulder stress.⁣

3️⃣ you can use a more neutral grip (as opposed to a barbell with its inherently fixed hand position) which allows the hands and arms to move freely throughout the press. this also helps to enhance shoulder stability as there are more degrees of freedom, which can be a game changer for individuals with shoulder pain/dysfunction.⁣

4️⃣ i could go on and on about how much @fatgripz have changed the game for me (and my athletes), but the basic premise is that intense grip activation takes a lot of stress off the elbow, wrist, and shoulder joints and places it onto the actual muscles doing the work. plus, the law of irradiation essentially states that the harder you squeeze a weight, the more strength the adjacent muscles will provide.⁣

💡 pro-tip: if you’re alone and wanting to go heavy, using 2 dbs can be risky business. do 1-arm db floor presses instead and you’ll be able to use the same amount of weight, albeit with an added element of anti-rotation thrown into the mix.

with my physical therapist's approval, i'm slowly bringing my leg days back. however, it is causing me to approach leg day differently.

i've dropped weight significantly and i have slowed down my movements trying to ensure that i am moving properly and that my form is correct. it certainly is a process as i do have a rotated hip, but i can certainly say the past few weeks of focusing on strengthening my lower back, my hips, core, and flexibility i'm getting very close to being pain free. .

i know to some this may seem like i'm regressing, but building my foundation back up with improved form will make me stronger in the long run and help me get rid/manage back and hip pain. .
.
i urge you to always evaluate your form before you move up in weight. if your form is bad and the weight goes up, you are asking for an injury. your body will thank you for taking the time to do things properly 😉

Objectives vs constraints “objective: a thing aimed at or sought; a goal.” “constraints: a limitation or restriction.” on program we had snatches /hang power/ and handstand push-ups.

i did warm-up, skill, build-up... part of warm-up was slamball tosses over head /pick it up and throw behind you/ someone hit the lights but that is different story #ifyouknowyouknow
and part of that was big emphasis and explanation what s****h is actually about in that we are primarily looking for a triple extension /eventually with overhead lookout/. this is for a ongoing discussion: if we really need to use s****h to reach it for everybody or we can really make the same stimulus by a different movement.

@aahatsajnani came to me before workout countdown started that she is feeling discomfort lowering bar down /think we were talking about and working on few weeks already and that she prefers to do slamball tosses.

she got it! she understood the message and smashed workout, left happy and healthy, without necessarily straining shoulder.

win 👍🏻💪🏻🔥 what if im unaware and ignorant and make her do snatches just because program said that?

many of the guys that i coach and also most guys i know; love to lift weights and get stronger but often hate to do any type of mobility work. .

i know that i’m guilty of this and often would rather skip the whole mobility stuff. 😬

however, when i hold myself accountable and im intentional about “making time” to do the “non-sexy” stuff, i really feel a difference in my performance. my body moves, feels, and recovers better. something we can all benefit from. .

Anyone can call themselves a dog trainer. there are zero regulations on dog training in the united states. zero. scary, right?

i decided to take the next step in my profession and get certified through the #ccpdt. i can't stand the thought of being grouped together with "trainers" who hurt dogs.
i couldn't stand not having this piece of paper that provides protection for owners and dogs from uneducated "dog trainers." i should have done this long ago. i've been anxiously awaiting my results and am over the moon about sharing this exciting news with all of you.
to earn my cpdt-ka certification, i needed at least 300 hours of hands-on work as a trainer, a veterinarian to attest to my work and character, and i needed to pass a rigorous 3-hour exam at a professional testing center. the exam focused on the science behind dog behavior and the application of modern training techniques.
this certification provides an independent, scientifically valid measure of my understanding of dog training, including instruction skills, learning theory, ethology, equipment and animal husbandry. it also demonstrates mastery of humane, science-based dog training practices.
i must adhere to the ccpdt's standards of practice and code of ethics and least intrusive, minimally aversive (lima) effective behavior intervention policies. more info on that at www.ccpdt.org.

i must earn 36 continuing education credits every three years to maintain my certification status.
and all of this ensures that i will be applying the most current science and techniques with my clients.
now that this is done, i'm actively working towards earning my fear free animal trainer certification with #fearfreepets.

it gave me the opportunity to believe in the fact that i can become the person that doesn’t get injured. which is a very big deal for me on both physically and mentally! i’m so grateful for this journey!

we are way to much focused on “getting something somewhere” - chin over bar, barbell overhead, hip all the way down, shoulders to “full lock out”... without considering how and why its done.⠀

...that can all be fine if we start from:⠀

“why?” then go to “how?” and that will lead us to “what?” we actually do.⠀

➡️do we want chin over bar without using back muscles? /teres major and lats/? ⠀
➡️do we want full lock out with bar overhead without using pectoralis to support position and shrugging with traps instead?⠀
➡️do we want hip bellow parallel even it means collapsing down and loosing control that is regained just by supernasty bounce up? /controlled bounce done by elite olympic weightlifter is something different./⠀
➡️do we want that deadlift even on cost of lower back pain /no damage in better cases/ ⠀
