i film in a garage because it’s the last place you would expect someone to workout. it’s to show that you don’t need a fancy gym, tons of machines and equipment, or really anything except your own body to be fit. no, you may not be able to be a bodybuilder with my workouts, but the type of fitness i believe in is not about becoming the biggest most ripped guy/girl in the room. it’s about keeping your body healthy, fit, and mobile. my workouts are there to help anyone, of any age, to practice becoming more mobile, becoming more flexible, lose weight and gain lean muscle, and able to increase life longevity. and all of this can be done anywhere, a gym, you home, driveway, park, garage, balcony, hotel room, beach, etc.

the saying: wider grip, wider lats has led to many people only utilizing the wide grip. however, studies have shown that a closer grip can actually result in a slightly higher activation in the lats (and higher bicep activation).⁠ ⁣

so anything between 1 to 1.25 of shoulder width is best for working your lats. q wider grip will result in stronger teres major and upper back activation. not developing the teres major can lead to a gap in your back physique.⁠⁣

Let’s set the record straight here. there are still too many coaches and trainers who tell their athletes and clients to “squat with their heels.“

follow @mister_manual 📍i’m not sure where this notion came from but it’s pretty obvious that if you try to squat with your heels you heavily risk falling back with the load and you’re not utilizing correct foot pressure. the main problem with trying to squat with your heels is that there’s a significant amount of reduced power production and lack of quad work, thus the load transfer is moved to your hamstrings, which is highly inefficient because you don’t squat with your hamstrings.

📍the other big mistake that you see, although not as often, is people trying to squat on their toes. you have the opposite effect here in which you undoubtedly fall forward.
.
📍the correct and overall best way to utilize foot pressure is with a tripod foot. this has the best power transfer, it utilizes the natural arch of the foot and also is the most safe and stable. utilizing the tripod foot also has the same effect during deadlifting and other exercises that utilize different planes of motion, single-leg movements and ground force production.

📍get smart. get educated and gain better performance

Ahhh lotus. i’m not entirely convinced this is the best thing for most bodies and i think we need to be very mindful with the rotational forces being applied to our knees here. i don’t teach it a lot and only practice it very occasionally. when i sit to meditate, or indeed just sit, lotus is not something i would go near. my default is burmese seating style; i find it comfortable, safe and sustainable. win win 😜.

the ankle is one of the most common areas to sprain due to the lack of overall stability.

while mobilizing and stretching the tissues around the ankle can help, equal attention should be placed on properly stabilizing the ankle to resume regular activity. improving your overall dynamic ankle stability will help strengthen the area along with prevent recurring sprains from happening.

1️⃣ 𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘𝗕𝗘𝗟𝗟 𝗦𝗪𝗔𝗣𝗦:
stand on one leg and hold onto a kettlebell. slightly hinge the hips backwards wit the knee slightly bent. slowly pass the kettlebell to the other hand and repeat. focus on having three points of contact on the foot at all times.

2️⃣ 𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗟𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗚 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦:
stand on one leg while holding onto a foam roller. keep the leg slightly bent and lower the foam roller to the ground. stand back up to the starting position. hinge back down and pick the foam roller back up. repeat the exercise but with different angles.

3️⃣ 𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗𝗦:
place a mini band around both knees and squat in a quarter squat position. place majority of your weight on one leg with the opposing foot slightly off the ground. draw big half circles all around the body while keeping the shin vertical to the ground. .credit for this post : @lustrength

The other day we conquered the wiregrass mall. •

conquering anxiety doesn’t mean you’re not afraid. it means you do it (whatever it is) afraid.
this mall is a place where i spent much of my time with my ex husband. he lives near here and the fear of running into him or his girlfriend had my head pounding, my heart rate rising, and my breath shaky when leaving the house.
i am here to have dinner with a friend and their family. i decided to come early and conquer my fears because they are my responsibility and no one else’s. i do not need coddling - and i do not want them spending the evening wondering what is “off” about me, aside from my blatant blue hair. 😂

i made it my mission to go to every place where i had formed memories with my ex husband - and places that i may run into him and his girlfriend - to create new memories where i honor myself and take time for myself. i prayed before entering the mall and relinquished my fears to the lord. i surrendered my fear saying “lord - if it be your will that i see him, let it be so. if not, if you can protect me from that painful encounter, so be it. either way - your will be done.” my fear of seeing my ex husband has nothing to do with any emotions remaining for him - there are none but well wishes. there is, however, hurt in seeing him succeed with someone else where we could not. i am happy for him, and want the best for him regardless of the hurt we caused one another. that being said, i am still human and things do affect me.
with troybilt at my side, worship music in my ears, and christ in my heart - god has allowed me to conquer this mall. it is no longer a place of fear or anxiety. i am dispelling those lies and claiming it as mine. ❤️

Tips for squats:
.
1️⃣ squat all the way down (at least 90 degrees on a bench if need be).
2️⃣ dont round the back.
3️⃣ keep the heels flat on the ground and drive through them on the way up.
4️⃣ make sure your knees go where your feet face. if feet are pointed out slightly , knees should go outward slightly.
5️⃣ don't be this guy.

the 2 common barbells you’ll see in the gym are the olympic and powerlifting barbells. let’s go over those differences and why you might chose one bar over the other.

the lifts typically done with this bar are the s****h and clean and jerk. this sport requires a great amount of technique and explosive strength compared to powerlifting. ⠀
➖whip (elasticity)
the essentially the amount of flexibility the bar has. when more weight is put on the bar, the bar will have more flex. the bar will then attempt to straighten itself out aka “the whip”. a skilled olympic weight lifter will be able to use the momentum the bar gives you from the whip to help propel the weight upward.

➖knurling (x pattern embedded in bar for grip)

2 ends of bar and sometimes in the middle
more fine ⠀
➖sleeve (plates loading area)
each sleeve must be able to rotate freely, smoothly, and quickly. this is because in a clean and jerk, when you bring the bar up and rotate it onto your hands, you will experience torque. the spin on the bar neutralizes that torque so it place excessive stress on your hands and wrist.

stiff bars so there is less elasticity. this is better able to handle heavier weights because of the stiffness.

➖knurling
3 knurling areas
center and 2 at the end of the bar
more coarse/aggressive for better grip. can help in gripping your back in a squat or holding on better in the deadlift.

➖sleeve
has some spin but not as sensitive as an olympic bar.

When you're a chunker, work the chunks. i take a saw to half rollers, and create smaller pieces that i spray paint with rubberized c**p so that it sticks to surfaces. give them to my clients to use for a number of things. this exercise is one of those things.

place the roller against the wall in the areas of the spine that you struggle with segmental movement, aka, the areas that you move in a chunk rather than a vertebrae at a time. for most folks this is the t-spine. if they struggle with connecting how to activate the muscles to extend and flex, the roller can help. i prefer upright to supine. i want people to work the position. not just roll back over with gravity.

i like to use a seated position with increased hip flexion to lock in the lumbar spine a little more. set the midline. work on moving the spine around the roller. change position as needed. doesn't look like much, but it is. segmental spine movement is small.

remember, if your spine cannot extend and flex, then it cannot rotate. know your order of operations.

this is one of the biggest myths that men have perpetuated in the weights room for decades.

where did it come from? who knows.
.
probably because if you start stretching (when you never used to stretch before) and back off on your strength training (to make time for the stretching) then you're strength training may suffer.

that seems pretty obvious doesn’t it 🤔 do less strength training to allow for more stretching and you may lose some strength.
.
or maybe it came from a perception that flexible people are weak when you compare say a flexible dancer or yogi compared with a weightlifter or bodybuilder.
.
who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️ but it is a belief that a lot of men in the gym have shared for a long time and it’s total rubbish.

it’s all about proper programming and understanding how to stretch effectively whilst strength training as well.
