There are a lot of things in life that people tell us aren’t okay, but here’s your reminder that it’s okay to:
• take a break
• ask for help
• grow as a person
• ditch toxic people
• have bad days
• say “no”

doing these things is normal and you shouldn’t feel bad in the slightest! you are allowed to do what makes you comfortable and at peace mentally.

This is something i created called a "treat sheet." i started handing this out to my psychiatrists when i decided to become more assertive about my treatment. i wrote a published a blog post yesterday called, "the shocking truth about psychiatrists treatment of people with a mental illness" and many of you asked about this.

on one side you write how you feel (whether it be on medication or not). on the other you write how you want to feel and what you want out of treatment. it can be anything. you have to be committed to working with your psychiatrists, but you want to make it clear what your needs and wants are. ask the psychiatrist, "can you help me get closer to how i want to feel?" if they say no, then say goodbye and find someone new. hope this helps!

Self care is not just the ‘glamorous’ and expensive things you see on instagram and all over social media. it’s not just bubble baths and face masks and huge shopping sprees. of course, if treating yourself to those things makes you feel good that that’s totally fine! but the reality is that it’s the hard self care that the most important. it’s the things people don’t share or talk about very often. it’s cutting out toxic people, going to a therapist every week, booking a doctors appointment, setting boundaries, getting some fresh air, letting yourself feel your emotions, resisting self sabotage, stopping bad habits. self care is hard work. but it is not a choice. you don’t need to spend money to be kind to yourself❤️✨

i have not written this, i just tweaked it and added men, men are also people with feelings and emotions. even though we function and think different, we are full of emotions too.

to the woman or men who have lost their spark.

to the woman or men who get up and go, has well and truly gone.

this is for you.

this is to reminder of whose son or daughter you are.

this is to remind you, that you don’t have to be everything to everyone, every day.

you didn’t sign up for that.

remember when you used to laugh? sing? throw caution to the wind?

remember when you used to forgive yourself more quickly for not always being perfect.

you can get that back again.

you really can.

and that doesn’t have to mean letting people down or walking away.

it just means being kinder to you, feeling brave enough to say no sometimes.

being brave enough to stop sometimes.

and rest.

it starts the moment you realise that you’re not quite who you used to be. some of that is good, some of that is not.

there are parts of you that need to be brought back.

and if anyone in your life is not okay with that… they are not your people. your people will be glad to see that spark starting to light up again.

so, if you have been slowly fading away my friend, this is the time to start saying yes to things that bring you joy and no to things that don’t.

it’s really pretty simple.

To me, depression is like standing outside in the rain. when you’re first outside you think oh f**k i’m getting wet so you try and look for shelter. you can handle a bit of rain, it’s not so bad. but it starts getting heavier and you’re getting colder and wetter. if you find shelter, you’ll stay cold and wet for a little while but eventually you’ll start to dry off. but if you can’t find cover, you’re left out to soak and freeze outside. it only gets worse and worse until eventually you’re numbed by the cold and a feeling of helplessness kicks in. you’re already soaked through so there’s no point even looking for shelter now, maybe you feel like a warm dry place doesn’t exist or even if you found it you’re already soaked and shivering. be somebody’s shelter before they find themselves left to drown. reach out to people, speak to them, be there for them. 💙 #suicideprevention .

Words i’ve been living by. we hear it all the time in the intuitive eating and anti-diet regime: trust your body. trust your gut. trust your mind. trust your hunger cues. trust the process. trust the pros.

and i agree - this is absolutely the ideal mindset in recovery!

but sometimes, for some, it’s not safe to trust our mind yet. we haven’t finished building and strengthening the many neural pathways our brains need to begin thinking and feeling outside of the box our disorder traps us in. for some that means taking teeny tiny baby steps toward intuitive eating and for others that means diving in head first.

there have been times that following an interchangeable meal plan guideline was ideal for me, times where i could let go and eat intuitively, and times where following a less than ideal meal plan was just too scary and overwhelming. i’ve had false starts and set backs and leaps and tumbled of all kinds.

when you are in that place, where your true self and your behavior haven’t aligned just yet, that’s when having a support network to remind you of who you are and what you need can be so powerful.

this week, when my brain is screaming that i don’t need this and that this will all be a waste of everyone’s time, i’m trusting my professionals, my people, and the process.

Today i decided to take a risk and share my blog out into my professional network on linkedin, needless to say the response has been incredible. i always wanted to do my part in shifting the stigma, i’m so grateful that i’m able to do that by using my voice and my words. in just one post i have reached over 2000 people in 6 hours. i did this because i don’t want others to have to hide in the dark with their stories anymore, and most of all i want people to know there is hope. i’m so ecstatic with the responses i have received from everyone so far. i knew this was the right thing to do as soon as i clicked “publish” on this website. let’s stop hiding our mental health in the dark and be there for one another. 💙 #iamkierinspark #mentalhealth #mentalhealthblog

I usually just tell people i have social anxiety instead of saying that i have selective mutism. because, well, first of all, for me, social anxiety is a part of selective mutism, but also; people usually know what social anxiety is, but no one knows about selective mutism unless they have it themself or knows someone who does.

By default, i live for rebellion but i used to try really hard to be as obedient as she needed me to be so that she would love me and acknowledge me but what i began to realize was that nothing i did or could do would be satisfactory enough for her and she would still find fault in who i was. that reality helped me start doing what i wanted, but i had copious amounts of unlearning to do so that i could accept and love myself as i was. my narrative for the longest time was my mother’s voice, and even now i sometimes hesitate to make certain choices because i’m not sure if it’ll be seen as acceptable. it’s really tough undoing what was acceptable because for so long i thought that’s how i could find some validation in this world.

I think that a lot of people feel ashamed of their mental illness. it is certainly something i have struggled with.

i have spent a lot of time feeling embarrassed that i have anorexia in my 40s. i know that this isn't necessary but try telling my brain that! deep down i know that this is completely unjustified.
i think it mainly comes from cultural images of anorexia being about white skeletal teenage girls. this couldn't be further from the truth, it is a mental illness and it doesn't discriminate. people of any age, gender or race can have an eating disorder and none of us should feel shame.

some time ago, i published a drawing saying "it's okay to take a break". after talking a bit in the comments, i was reminded that it's even necessary and very important. it helps being more focused and having a better mental health. or to not degrade it.
really, we should not forget that. it's recommended to take at least one every 2 hours.

I just want to say that i didn't want to do this. i didn't want to wake up and start the day because my brain felt foggy, clouded by the smoke of the hot garbage fire that is my anxiety. but i tried. one step at a time. i got my a*s out of bed and i tried. trying turned into it getting done and i'm so happy i did.✨i have a challenge by @1upnutrition to complete and i'm not going to stop now.
