Failure equals lack of success. so what is success? it is an arbitrary term mostly defined by the individual but heavily influenced by society or other social circles. success can be defined in so many ways. for some, getting out of bed and realizing you're still breathing could be a personal success while most of society would sneer at you and probably throw some shade packed full of machismo. at the other end of the spectrum, you a guy making his first million not recognizing it as a success and having their inner critic take them down the rabbit hole of failure.
how do you get past failure? sfas is the beginning of the selection process for becoming a green beret and you're always being assessed but never knowing if you failed. when i was going through it, the best course of action when thinking i might have failed was to quickly figure out what went wrong, correct it for next time and move on to the next task at hand giving it 100%. for some this was too much to handle and their inner critic got the best of them and they rang the bell, self identifying as a failure. for me sfas was a very quiet and ominous time. you're consistently being watched and assessed by cadre who by nature are very quiet, showing no praise or emotion to your successes or failures. at times it seemed more like a psychological test to see who would fail without ever being told you failed.
let's fast forward 15 years, pretty much your dd214, any skill badge, rank or tab didn't and doesn't mean anything to civilians and they don't transfer into life outside the military. some will argue this but for the most part imo it's true. you are basically a zero and not a hero all those wins and successes were only recognized within your own tiny circle. i have also tried college several times, always ending in failure. you're the beginner with no useful professional skills applicable to civilian life or so i thought. this ate at me for years and had turned into a serious problem when combined with other health issues in my life. it was affecting my family and any social life that i had. **continued in comments**

Why? because they’re worried about not being able to find a job or a home when they sign off, or they think they'll experience ptsd.⁣

well we're not having that! 💪 throughout this week we'll be introducing you to ex-service personnel who, like most who leave the armed forces, have gone on to achieve huge success in their lives and their careers.⁣

use smeac, and ask yourself what is the
situation: what situation are you are finding yourself in?
-
-
mission: what is the end goal or the commanders intent?
-
execution: how are you going to carry it out?
-
admin & logistics: what support items are needed?
-
command & signals: who do you need to contact?

then you might find yourself on the way to solution.

𝚈𝚘𝚞'𝚛𝚎 𝚠𝚎𝚕𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚎.....⁣

when i was in the air force and i left, i'd always have people thanking me for my service. at times it felt so awkward to stand there and say 'you're welcome,' because i didn't join for the recognition, the discounts or the "perks." i joined because deep down, something guided me to it, something told me that my left was made to serve and protect. ⁣

i know i don't really talk about my time in the military, honestly sometimes i forget that it was a part of my life. what i should talk about is my struggle with life after service. before you separate for the military there is a transition class you have to take, it prepares you for civilian life, talks about writing resumes and how to dress for an interview. all and all a really good class, but once your home there are no classes. ⁣

i struggled to find a sense of belonging, i was going to the local community college and sitting in a room full of recent high school graduates who didn't know life outside of home. i didn't have this big veterans community around me, there are some but most are alot older so i didn't want to go to their meetings. i isolated myself, i took classes and worked part time jobs where i made new friends. i struggled because i didn't have the strong community i had in the air force. ⁣

to this day i sometimes struggle with it, but opening some old trunks and going through my memories from my air force days made me smile. smile because i know that all over the world i have a family, we might not keep in touch, be we have our memories and that won't change. ⁣

kevin made me put my top on again, i can only button one button but he's calling it my "goal" jacket, i'm just happy to put it back on and smile.

When you separate from the military, the most commonly asked question is “what’s next?” whether the path leads to school, to the work force, or back home, the big step that’s considered is what you do after you remove the uniform. the step that i struggled with, however, was who i am.

i served in the us army for over 10 years - for most of my 20s. this is the time in most people’s lives when they’re figuring out who they are and what kind of adult life they will lead. i had all of that dictated to me by my direct superior and a stack of regulations. i loved serving. it was probably the perfect environment for me to thrive in: i knew exactly what everyone expected of me at any given moment. the bar to succeed was placed right in front of my face and my job was to jump over it everyday.

but with service comes sacrifice. yes, there’s the obvious time away from friends and family, being in places that you would never imagine living in, maintaining physical and mental fitness to accomplish the mission. but when i separated i dealt with the invisible sacrifices: i spent so long in the army that i had no idea what “adrienne” was like. i knew 100% who ssg kambouris was, and i loved being her. but separating and going back to school left me to experience a lot from a new perspective. one of color and options.

does adrienne walk on grass? does she wear make up everyday? what style of clothes does she like? does she weigh 130 lbs or 180? i’ve been out of the army for almost seven years, and i’m still figuring this out. so thanks @whiskyandworkout @brandnewc @ro_baby @_just_ree_ for helping me figure out just who adrienne is.

Why do i meditate? 📸 @perrirunion .

for the longest time, i’ve been afraid of sitting with my thoughts.
.
then one day i decided to give it a try, i lasted just 5 breaths and i got up.
.
i couldn’t sit with my feelings.
.
the next day i tried again, but this time i used an app. and i was able to sit for five minutes.
.
and after a few months of consistent practice, i’m on to mediation with no apps and just silence.
.
what was the biggest change?
.
i found a way to relate to mediation with training and sex.
.
in order to have a hard training session, you need to have adequate sleep, hydration, nutrition, and a good warmup. all of these variables enhance performance and without them, you’ll most likely injure yourself. .
the same can be said about sex. you can have great s*x without foreplay and sometimes it’s fun, but eventually, your s*x life will get stale and suffer.
.
mediation is like foreplay for your mind.
.
if you want to make sound decisions and be less reactive in the world, meditation can help.
.
if you want to be less stressed, meditation can help.
.
and if you want to face your fears, meditation will help you see what is stopping you.
.
how do you start?
.
like anything, start small. give yourself five minutes first thing in the morning and see how you feel throughout the day for a week.
.
if that is okay, try ten to fifteen and see what you notice in your life that changes.
.
mediation is still tough for me and i have practice being still with my thoughts. but just like i had to train consistently for my competitions, it’s a skill that takes consistency and patience.
.
who’s in for 5 minutes a day over the next week?
.

I’ve been challenged by @traverboehm to name 2020.
.
when he first asked me i was stumped, but after deep reflection on all that happened in 2019, i am claiming 2020 the year of the phoenix.
.
why?
.
when your world gets thrown upside down and you hit rock bottom , you have no choice but to rise from the dark pits you have been thrown into.
.
suffering changes you and falling apart has given me a chance to build something new.
.
when you think of 2020 , think of who you want to become. the things you will do are a reflection of the person you want to be.
.
we are all born for something great , will you make 2020 your year?

Fuck the rules 👊
.
the crazy thing about losing everything is that you get to start over.
.
despite all the craziness in life , i have found more strength than any other mission or obstacle i’ve ever seen as a marine.
.
that place of darkness gave me power to write a new set if rules.
.
today i’m no longer a s***e to other people’s lives or expectations. i’m not a hostage to the limited beliefs i’ve told myself for years.
.
it’s going to be 2020, which means you can either find every chance to bend or break rules , or create your own.
.
i choose to say f**k the rules and do whatever the f**k i want and so can you.
.
what do you want to change about a certain area of your life that is holding you back?
.
what rule is keeping you here?
.
what can you commit to change and what new experiences will you give yourself to set yourself free?
.
what stands between you today and the man you want to become is the set of rules that hold you back.

As 2019 comes to close, i've come to accept all that is, and am discovering how to grow from the chaos.
.
one way i've done that is to get away more.
.
i’ve been inside my head my entire life.
.
today i took time to get away and reflect on all the things i’ve experienced in life.
.
from the marine corps , to marriage, fatherhood, divorce and finding a career that i love, life is truly a gift.
.
i don’t know why life unfolds the way it does , but this time rather than fight it, i’m leaning with it.
.
time does not heal you, what heals you is creating new experiences with that new life and time that you have.
.
in 2020, if you want to change, it starts by looking inward and facing that man in the mirror.
.
if you don’t like what you see, then stop living a lie. be honest with yourself and seek help.
.
tell a brother you are struggling.
.
hire a mentor.
.
talk to your partner.
.
take a solo trip.
.
whatever you do, change your path by doing something different.
.
who else is exited for 2020?

i like this quote because my life has been chaotic since the divorce.
.
the last few months i’ve been trying to focus on simplicity.
.
i’ve come to find joy in a cup of coffee again.
.
i’ve opened up my conversations to words and thoughts i would have never expressed previously.

i’m authentically engaged in the world , even if it’s just a smile here and a nod there.

none of this has been easy.

but i believe that there is opportunity around me and it’s up to me to lean into all that life has given me.

when your life is hectic , remember to seek out opportunities where you might not look.

that could be a cup of coffee, a small text to a friend , or a smile to a stranger.

it could be asking for a promotion at work.

Why don’t you fight for your life?
.
when did you begin to give up?
.
what day did you decide you are not worthy?
.
if you are struggling and not feeling like yourself ,i know what you are feeling.
.
i hid for years. living to please everyone and anyone but myself.
.
i took on more responsibility than i could handle.
.
i became addicted to substances and other things and hid my demons.
.
but one day i woke up and said it was enough.
.
i want to be here and watch my daughter grow.
.
i am hurting still and have a lot of pain to face , but i’m okay with saying that.
.
i don’t want to hurt anymore .
.
i will continue to fight because everyday is a struggle. .
depression is real, and when life unexpectedly hits you hard you have to dig down deep.
.
i have faced the man in the mirror and told him i didn’t like what i see.
.
he shouted back plenty of times to hold his ground , but i fought back and will continue to fight back.
.
maybe this is what they mean by your pain will be your greatest gift shall you lean into the life that is unfolding.

These days i give less f***s about how much weight i can lift and more about how i feel.
.
i used to wake up stressed and immediately go crush a workout.
.
and while that workouts are a great way to reduce stress, it was causing me more harm than good as i built up a lot of imbalances in my body.
.
today i focus more on movement because after all we are humans and are supposed to move.
.
here’s a sample week from my current routine 👊
.
sunday - rest , nothing majorly active or no work. just fun and relaxation.
.
monday - full body training - a combo of mobility and barbell training for performance.
.
tuesday - at home kettlebell workout that focus on muscular endurance through basic movements.
.
wednesday- max strength/cardio i still believe it’s important to challenge the muscles and it’s just good as men to physically challenge yourself when it comes to strength.
.
thursday - cardio /aerobic endurance.
.
friday - fun day, i just have fun and move around.
.
saturday - yoga .

Will you make 2020 your best year or will you stay the same?
.
every year people set out for goals only to fall short. but why? .
i have found that most people who set goals fall short because they look for the quick fix or the shiny thing to save them.
.
if you want to hit your goals and keep striving for excellence you’ll need these things :
.
initiative - you need to want your goal so bad that you are willing to take action and do whatever it takes to achieve it.
.
trust - hitting a big goal requires navigating through the suck. you’ll face doubt , exhaustion, and friends and family may challenge you. in those times it’s important to trust yourself and the process.
.
consistency- your goal doesn’t matter if you don’t have a plan that is consistent. no matter what it is, you must find a way to do one thing better everyday to get closer to what you want.
.
i’d love to hear your thoughts , drop your goals below 👍

It can be easy to lose ourselves at the expense of life.
.
from our careers, relationships and our health, staying true to yourself can be difficult especially if you’ve never sat down and inventoried of your life.
.
i thought i was good at facing my fear and overcoming challenges. but 2019 hit me hard and forced me to see that i've been running from pain my entire life.
..
when i faced my pain for the first time, and chose not to drink or have s*x after divorce, i felt broken. .
but i know that i am far from that.
.
these days rather than run from what i’m afraid of, i lean into the fear.
.
it still hurts, and i get to see the gift that comes from using my pain to my advantage
.
if you human, chances are you have some pain and fear you are holding inside.
.
i want you to know that if you keep running from what you need to face, you’ll continue to feel invisible to the world.
.
the very thing you are running from will give you insights and strength to live a better life shall you take responsibility for what is.
.
if you have something in your life that you know you need to face ask yourself 👊
.
👊how does running make you feel?
..
👊what is the story you tell yourself when you run?
.
👊how do you feel when you believe this story?
.
👊what do you want from running?
.
👊what do you need to do to get what you want?
.
👊what is one thing you can do right now to get what you want?

These days i look for strength internally rather than externally 📸 @perrirunion.
.
i lm learning that one of the largest mistakes i’ve made in my life was not an event , but rather my view of what it meant to be a man.
.
i was caught in a paradigm that limited me in more ways than i thought.
.
then one day that paradigm was crushed and i had to face reality.
.
and i met guys like @1jughead1 who showed me that being a man is more than what i had thought.
.
today, i focus on awareness of myself over everything.
.
i still love to train hard, look good and feel good, but i’m learning that the definition of what it means to be a man is about being the best version of yourself.
.
i know there is a beast inside of me, but rather than let that beast consume me, i quietly acknowledge him and learn from it rather than run.
.
i share my journey in hopes to show you that you can only control how you respond to life , not what happens.
.
looking inward is a skill that will take you as far as you want to go in a life full of happiness.
.
thanks brother, i got your back 💪

These days my mornings are no longer filled with anger and rage, but curiosity and gratitude for life.
.
and i know that gratitude is a buzzword today , but coming from a place of abundance truly does make a difference.
.
i love my first sip in silence in the morning and it something i look forward to every day.
.
most of my life has been in a constant state of stress. .
from the moment i woke up till the moment i went to bed, i was in a state of anxiety that prevented me from enjoying the smaller things.
.
meditation is bringing calm into my life that gives me the strength to enjoy the moment.
.
sitting with my thoughts is not something i’ve ever done. and it’s this consistency of stepping into the unknown that is allowing me to stay true to myself.
.
rock bottom kind of forces you to do that.
.
i have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
.
as we end 2019 and step into the new decade , i want to ask you what are you willing to do to change?
.
what do you want to try that you are afraid of? drop it below 💪

I wasn’t always in peak physical condition.
.
when i was a young marine, i drank a lot and partied.
.
sure , i could pass the standards and run for miles , but i felt like s**t inside and as you can see i wasn’t in great shape.
.
as i grew older i also grew wiser and started to work smarter not harder.
.
the last year has been the biggest transformation where i’ve eliminated all distractions from my life.
.
from substances to s****y food, i’ve taken it all away and feel amazing.
.
if you are struggling with the person you see in the mirror, know that change takes time.
.
it took ten years of consistent work, hitting rock bottom and a variety of other events that got me to where i am today.
.
fitness has been my fortifier for survival.
.
if you want to make 2020 your year , then the best thing you can do for yourself is to start being honest.
.
that means if you want to change your health, you will have to change your habits and life.
.
you can’t change without hard work and consistency.
.
i have spots open for coaching in 2020. if this is something you are interested and think we might be a great fit, drop a comment and say let’s crush 2020.

How many times do you find yourself doing something that goes against what you stand for throughout the day?
.
i was stuck living someone else’s dream for years.
.
saying yes to everyone and everything i’m front of me.
.
when i started to say “no “ , things started to change.
.
living with integrity is something i’m still learning to do everyday , but i remind myself that it’s part of the journey.
.
where in your life do you know you can start giving zero f***s about what others think of you and start thinking about yourself because you know you worth it?

I’m about to get real with you.
📸 @perrirunion
as 2019 draws to a close, i find i’m filled with gratitude and love for all of the events that have happened.
.
it was one of the most challenging years of my life.
.
my divorce and suicide attempt forced me to seek and accept help for the first time in my life.
.
since being removed of life’s most obvious addictions , i have faced some of my toughest battles till the day.
.
2019 was a rebirth that forced me to have uncomfortable conversations with myself and other people.
.
with the help of @traverboehm i’ve sat down and inventoried all the things that were standing in my way for years.
.
i’m not sharing my story or writing these posts to say i’m better- hell i know i’m worse.
.
i’m sharing my story in hopes to help others who are struggling with the same thing.
.
since the iraq war over 6000 veterans committed suicide a year.
.
according to psychology today divorced men are nine times more likely to commit suicide than divorced women.
.
and that’s not even the bulk of the problems.
.
as i went through hours of coaching and therapy i have found that life is a direct correlation of your closest relationships.
.
that’s why in 2020 i’ll be publishing a book on the topic and working on building a new course to help others get their life back.
.
2020 will be a year to remember.
.
if you want help breaking down your goals in 2020 to make it your best year yet, drop a comment or send me a dm.

In search for the perfect life, i lost all that i worked hard for.
.
i thought happiness was achieved by the things i accomplished, so naturally i always wanted more.
.
everything had to be perfect. i was a marines, and i made sure everyone around me knew that.
.
attention to detail in all aspects of life , i was never satisfied with anything that was going on in my life.
.
naturally it took hitting rock bottom to realize that there is no such thing as perfect.
.
there is no perfect body.
.
no perfect relationship.
.
no perfect career.
.
it doesn’t exists, what matters is that you find how to live in this moment and appreciate what you have.
.
because if you don’t, your pursuit of perfection could cost you everything you have.

I used to be that guy who would want to work all day every day.
.
hustle hard or die trying.
.
then after hitting rock bottom and realizing that good things can happen without working more, i’ve switched up the way i look at things.
.
👊the first was prioritizing what mattered to me for the first thing in the morning. for years i would wake up in a stressed state, crush a workout then go through the day only to be more exhausted.
.
today, i give myself just 15 minutes a day to work on the number one thing i know will make me happy. and that allowed me to write a book. thanks to @realcraigballantyne for the formula.
.
👊i meditate and journal. i know i know, you’ve probably seen a lot of s**t out there on mindfulness. but honestly, it’s true. i find happiness in this space and i think it’s something you should try.
.
optimize the body - we are meant to move. if you don't, your life will slowly fade away. you don’t have to lift, but get your a*s outside , take a yoga class, stretch and just move your body for at least 30 minutes a day.
.
hope these help you like they’ve helped me. comment below with something you must have in your life daily.

I’ve been thinking about what it means to exist in humanity today.
.
i think we are capable of so much more , yet we often exists with only a small percentage of our true potential. .
but why?
.
what does it mean to live with integrity?
.
to me, iintegrity is when our thoughts, words, and actions are in alignment.
.
as i sit here and tear down old walls, and build new ones, i’ve realized that i wasn’t really living at all.
.
and maybe you feel the same way too.
.
we are capable of so much more , yet we limit ourselves in fear of what others think.
.
but what if you did what you wanted and cared less about what others thought of you?
.
how would that change your life?
.
you are who you are and if you are not writing your own story then what are you doing?
.
i don’t know about you, but i’m choosing to write and live my own story.
.
it’s filled with emotions, it’s challenging, it’s exhausting, it’s fun, and it’s rewarding.
.
who’s with me? what are you doing with your life that you are proud of?

It’s crazy to see how difficult living in the now actually is.
.
for years i spent worrying about tomorrow.
..
today , i know none of that matters and the only thing that does is right now.
.
being engaged in the moment has allowed me to create what i love.
.
it has allowed me to be a better father.
.
most of all, it’s allowed me to heal and grow.
.
if you are anxious and worried about what nexts, you could be missing out on a lot of opportunities in front of you.
..
bruce lee said to live life whole heartedly, the answer is to live.
.
what are you doing right now that allows you to live?
