📍 dumbbells vs barbell

dumbbell exercises will active more stabiliser muscles. they therefore force your muscles to work harder, and will engage more muscles. this does however mean you are not able to lift as much as you would with a barbell equivalent exercise.
-
because you are able to lift more with a barbell, it is better suited for progressive overload and heavy lifting. you are also able to increase the weight in 2.5 kg increments. if you are using dumbbells however, you have to increase at least 5kg (2.5 kg+ in each hand).
-
dumbbells allow for a greater range of motion. with a barbell your movement pattern is restricted. you can achieve more depth in a dumbbell chest press than a normal barbell bench press, because the bar is not in the way. this causes a better stretch in the chest. dumbbells also allows for a natural movement pattern, making it easier on the joints.

dumbbells also help correct muscle imbalances, because each muscle is working independent of each other. this helps you look more symmetric and aesthetically pleasing.

it is easier to handle heavy weights with a barbell than with dumbbells. often, the hardest part of a dumbbell exercise is getting into position, and getting the dumbbells up. a barbell is typically unracked and does not have this issue.

while that may seem like a lot of protein, it is doable if you take note of it and make an effort to do so. the best way is to plan out your day ahead of time. you should know how many meals you’re eating in a day, how much protein you’re consuming in those meals, and how much room left over you’ll have for snacking. make sure you track your calories so you can observe how much protein you’re consuming. .

a compound movement is a multi-joint movement. these movements are largely beneficial because of their ability to incorporate multiple muscle groups into a single lift. this means you can get more work done, in less time by incorporating compound lifts.

compound movements should be a huge focus in your training. whether your goal is muscle gain, weight loss, or athletic performance, compound lifts are going to give you the best results. isolation lifts (single joint movement) still serve a time and purpose so don’t feel like you should just completely abandon them. rather, think of 80% compounds | 20% isolations. -
above i’ve listed the basic 6 compound movements. there are a lot of variations to these movements but often times we don’t need to stray away from the basics. -
start to add these compound movements to your routine to really start to maximize your results. .

1️⃣ankle mobilizations: you will need excellent ankle mobility in order to allow your knees to travel over your toes during the overhead squat.

2️⃣thoracic spine extensions: as you can see in the overhead squat, you need to be able to extend through your t-spine in order to keep your chest open and arms overhead. we love the @acumobility ultimate back roller (shown here) but any yoga wheel or foam roller will help get the job done!

3️⃣seated wall slides: the seated position helps to open up the hips, and the wall slide helps to mobilize the shoulders and strengthen the mid and low traps.
-
4️⃣squat to alternating overhead reach: now we’re starting to incorporate the newly gained ankle, t-spine, and hip mobility by integrating it all into a squat pattern!

5️⃣overhead squat with heel lift: if you’re feeling ready to put a bar overhead but still have some slight limitations with depth, you can elevate the heels slightly (with plates as pictured or with olympic lifting shoes) in order to help you stay more upright at the bottom!

most people perform ab exercises when there's a lot of air in their stomach still, preventing their abs from contracting properly since the air acts as a cushion. this is why people don't see any difference in their abs even if they work abs every day.

breathe in when you are at the start of the movement (whether it is crunches, sit-ups, leg raises, etc.) and slowly breathe out as you contract your abs. this will release the oxygen in your stomach, allowing you to contract your abs all the way!

This is my ‘ode to summer’ pie — a tumble of fresh berries baked in a flaky all-butter crust until bronzed and bubbling 🥰. it’s comfort food that tastes like june and smells like my grandmother’s kitchen; it’s stained lips, sticky fingers, and crumbs on my clothes. i’ve resisted the urge to “healthify” this recipe and continue to make it as my grandma taught me to: with white flour and sugar, lots of sweet cream butter, and a pound of fresh berries (although not fresh-picked, as hers would have been, because apartment life and garden life are unfortunately mutually exclusive 😆👩🏼‍🌾) tonight we’ll serve slices with vanilla bean ice cream *and* homemade whipped cream because...well, it’s nice to have options. but also because berry pie is best with both (grandma said so) 🥧🍨. i’ll be sharing the recipe in my stories later today.

just because it is summer and everyone is trying to shed off the last bit of f*t with cardio doesn't mean we should ever neglect heavy lifting. in fact, now more than ever, heavy lifting should be made a priority to ensure that you're not only maintain and/or build muscle mass while you lean out. compound lifts are paramount as they have the most potential for gains and your workouts should revolve around them. though you can talk about exercises per specific muscle group, i actually like categorizing them into pushing, pulling and leg-based mechanics. this allows for a lot of variety. for those that follow a full body split, you can pick 1-3 exercises per workout from each category and know you're hitting everything you need to hit. for those following a push-pull or push-pull-legs split, you can even choose up to 4-5 exercises within each category and know you're hitting what you need to hit with enough weekly volume; 10-20 sets per muscle group/mechanics of 6-12 reps per set sometimes focusing on the higher end of that range and other times the lower range to be a well functioned trainee. my favourite exercises within these categories are dips, pushups, pull-ups, barbell rows, and deadlifts. train hard friends.

dumbbell exercises will active more stabiliser muscles. they therefore force your muscles to work harder, and will engage more muscles. this does however mean you are not able to lift as much as you would with a barbell equivalent exercise.

because you are able to lift more with a barbell, it is better suited for progressive overload and heavy lifting. you are also able to increase the weight in 2.5 kg increments. if you are using dumbbells however, you have to increase at least 5kg (2.5 kg+ in each hand).

dumbbells allow for a greater range of motion. with a barbell your movement pattern is restricted. you can achieve more depth in a dumbbell chest press than a normal barbell bench press, because the bar is not in the way. this causes a better stretch in the chest. dumbbells also allows for a natural movement pattern, making it easier on the joints.

dumbbells also help correct muscle imbalances, because each muscle is working independent of each other. this helps you look more symmetric and aesthetically pleasing.

most people perform ab exercises when there's a lot of air in their stomach still, preventing their abs from contracting properly since the air acts as a cushion. this is why people don't see any difference in their abs even if they work abs every day.

breathe in when you are at the start of the movement (whether it is crunches, sit-ups, leg raises, etc.) and slowly breathe out as you contract your abs. this will release the oxygen in your stomach, allowing you to contract your abs all the way!
