It’s that time of year where the days are shorter, the skies are greyer, and we all tend to retreat into ourselves more. winter is a yin season, meaning that it’s normal to be less active and vibrant and more reserved and introverted.
for some people, however, this can lead to sad, or seasonal affective disorder. a mild or severe depression can sink in with less access to sunlight and warmth.
i want you all to embrace the winter and feel your best no matter the season. here are my best tips for staying on top of sad and enjoying these wintry days.
journal – journaling is a great yin activity that can also beat depression. some find it helpful to unload their troubles onto paper, while others prefer to focus on the positive. i suggest starting with gratitude. write 3-5 things you are grateful for and why in your journal daily. this takes just a few minutes but can really brighten your day.
stay active – exercise is one of the best ways to fight depression. it can be more difficult to get exercise in the winter, but even a quick dance session in your bedroom or morning yoga flow can keep the blues at bay.

This is me & my crazy little brood.

we aren’t perfect but we are perfectly imperfect.
being a parent is a full on job. there are no let-ups. i’m not kidding when i say that i can count on one hand the amount of unbroken night’s sleep i’ve had in the last 10 years 🤣

but something i’ve learnt is that i need to take care of myself in order to look after others better. it’s self-care. making me a priority too.
for me my self-care is exercise. making time to exercise isn’t selfish it’s important for our family functioning. exercise means i can not only keep up with our fast paced lives, but it also makes me feel confident about myself & generally happier. a happy mum means a happier family.
whatever your self-care, you need that time parents!! it’s not selfish, it’s essential.
