Healthy vs healthy😬😬 (read this caption!)


let me just say that i am a big fan of eating healthy food (of course😂). however, trying to reach any fitness goal (fat loss/muscle gain) by simple “eating healthy” can be a frustrating journey.. 😩


explain?
10 years ago i didn’t know a single thing about calories or macronutrients. zero. so when i tried to go on a diet, and tried to lose some weight, i would just start “eating healthy”. so i would cut out (what i thought was) unhealthy foods like bread, candy, chocolate etc. and only eat foods labeled as “healthy” (😭)


guess what? it didn’t work. i didn’t lose any weight. so it was basically what i call a lose-lose situation (opposite of win-win🤪). because i didn’t get to eat the foods i enjoyed (🍕🍫) and it didn’t even make me lose weight.


fast forward a few years and i started learning about calories and macros. and the fact that i could fit some chocolate or some ice-cream into my otherwise healthy diet and still lose weight.🤯🤯 because total caloric intake is the number 1 thing that controls weight-management (not if the food is “healthy” or “unhealthy”).


so to wrap up this reaaaally long caption (sorry) i want to say that health matters a lot. but when it comes to losing weight, there has to be an understanding of calories. because as you can see in the picture there can be a big difference of calories in two foods even though they’re both “healthy” !!

ingredients:
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, pounded to less than 1 inch thickness
salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon italian seasoning (or ½ teaspoon dried oregano + ¼ teaspoon dried basil + ¼ teaspoon dried thyme)
4 slices mozzarella cheese
½ cup basil pesto (try my easy 5 minute pesto recipe - it's the best!!)

so delish! use another protein if you wish!
• ingredients: sirloin steak, 1 cup brown rice, onion,

• directions: bake peppers 400f until tender. heat oil in skillet, cook onion then steak + season. take pepper halves and fill with mixture. place cheese and bake until melted.

You don’t need to ‘earn’ your food with exercise 🚫!

it’s been all over the news today – a meta-analysis looked at pace (physical activity calorie equivalent) food labelling, which states both the calories in the food as well as how much exercise you’d need to do to burn off the food. the meta-analysis claimed to show that pace food labelling was more effective than other types of food labelling.
what does more effective mean? people eating fewer calories. because everything has to be about weight loss 🙃.
.
there are a number of issues i have with this:
.
firstly, the general principle of it. implying that people should ‘burn off’ the food they eat is ridiculous. we need calories (energy) in order to survive, even if we don’t get off the sofa all day. the concept of ‘burning off’ your food can encourage eating disorder behaviours (it would fall under the category of purging). not 🙅🏼‍♀️ something i think we should be encouraging in people. .
secondly, my issues with the study itself. the study compared pace labelling to several other types (including none at all) and lumped them all together into one comparison group. when you tease out the individual studies in the meta-analysis you see that only when compared to no labelling was pace ‘successful’ in a statistically significant way. so labelling food makes people eat less than no labelling at all. not exactly ground-breaking. 😬 however, the most significant studies analyses also didn’t measure people’s actual food consumption in response to these labels, only people’s expectations of what they would eat. when it comes to food, expectations rarely tend to match reality 😉.
so what we actually have here is that putting nutritional info on a label makes people think they’ll eat less in the immediate aftermath. there’s no long-term information, no measuring of whether this impacted people’s mental health or their preoccupation with food.

overall, you might be able to tell i’m not super keen on this idea 🤷🏼‍♀️. i think the issues and the negative implications on people’s relationship with food far outweigh any potential perceived benefits. so hopefully this idea won’t happen 🤞🏻

Dinner is served 🍴 👅

omg! guys! i almost had a heart attack!

so i followed what google told me to do, to make lengua de res in the crockpot:

add:
- 1 bay leaf
- onion cut in 4
- 3 garlic cloves
- salt & pepper

covered tongue w/ water
& set for 8 hours


when i got home i was excited to start cutting it up and serving... it wasn’t done!!

it was rubbery, which i thought “oh no, i over cooked it”
after having a #hispanicpanic!! i decided to boil it stove top and hope to god it will somehow still make it.

it did!!! i boiled it in a lid tight pot, for about 1 hour / 1 hour & a half
- it worked!! 🥳


served with:
- diced onion
- diced cilantro
& green salsa + avocado 🥑 ⠀

i ate mine in two pieces (1/2 of a flat bread) of cut da carb 😋 #cutdacarb

although it’s clear to see that in this post, i am suggesting that the first option would potentially fit someone’s daily nutritional requirements “better” than the pringles.. and leave you feeling satisfied for longer.. this is not to say that any choice is better.

both options could happily fit within a healthy lifestyle🏃🏻‍♀️🏃‍♂️
if for example, 80% of the time you are going with foods with some nutritional value, then some pringles on the weekend may be😏good for the soul❤️

it’s just about making smart choices (most of the time!)🤩

🤷🏼‍♂️“𝘐 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥” said almost every client ever. my response is always the same. “so you want to lose some f*t so you can see more muscular definition?” i want nothing but to see clients achieve the results they desire, unfortunately this doesn’t happen overnight, it takes hard work and a consistent effort each day! which a lot of people aren’t prepared to do.⁣

💪everyone has muscle mass, how much we have is going to vary based on the individual and their training experience and genetics. some of you may be in a place where you’re happy with the amount of muscle you have and can focus purely on getting rid of the f*t covering it to achieve that “toned” look. but if you’re anything like me starting out, you won’t have much muscle and may have some f*t to lose. as a beginner you’ll get away with briefly being able to gain muscle and lose f*t at the same time (providing you’re training/eating appropriately), but eventually your body is going to adapt and it’s a good idea to focus on one or the other.⁣

📈you may need to build on those calories and set performance goals to get stronger & put on some muscle first. not only will this set you up to look better when you do eventually lose that f*t but you’ll be able to lose it eating more! more muscle mass = a higher bmr (basal metabolic rate) it’s important to maintain a calorie surplus and follow a resistance training program that incorporates compound exercises, implements progressive overload techniques and allows for sufficient recovery between workouts to ensure that precious mass is built. with this might come slight f*t gain, but thats okay! we can always lose it going through a f*t loss phase and maintaining a healthy energy deficit! stop looking for the magic pill, the result you’re wishing for is a sum of small efforts made consistently each day. keep at it and trust the process!⁣

Una alimentación balanceada y sobre todo que te haga feliz es esa que no te exige comer cada cierto tiempo, ni comer sólo algunos alimentos y eliminar tus favoritos. .

el balance se trata de poder seguir comiendo lo que te gusta a la hora que te den ganas controlando las cantidades. en la foto ven alimentos naturales (avena y frutas), altos en fibra y muy nutritivos. eso que parece un desayuno es mi snack de las 5 p.m. porque comer carbohidratos de noche no engorda ni hace mal.

también ven una cucharada de #chocti , una crema de chocolate (como #nutella ) pero que en vez de aceites dañinos tiene mantequilla clarificada (ghee). es una opción mucho más saludable pero no por eso te puedes comer todo el tarro. el 90% de ese plato es comida “limpia”, el 10% es un procesado... balancea así todos tus días y tu dieta será más llevadera. .

no es necesario que elimines tu pan favorito, ni el arroz, ni el chocolate 🍫🤤.

this bread is seriously delightful!

the ingredients and method are very easy which makes this excellent for a #breakfast #snack or #dessert option.

add all of your ingredients to the blender, bake while you're showering...you'll then be beckoned back into your kitchen by a heavenly aroma, and your family will think you're a professional baker with superhuman capabilities!

makes 12 servings

ingredients:
2 cups rolled oats
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3 ripe bananas
1/4 cup raw honey or maple syrup
2 large #eggs cinnamon, vanilla, nuts, optional
2 tbsps melted ghee, butter, or oil
1/4 cup #chocolate chips

instructions:
preheat oven 350 degrees and line an 8x4 inch loaf pan.

place the oats and baking soda in a blender, and add in the remaining ingredients, except for the chocolate chips, and pulse. stir in the chocolate chips, then pour the mixture into your loaf pan.

if you want to, sprinkle chocolate chips and set 1/2 of a sliced #banana on top of the #bread as shown to make it look pretty.

bake for 35-45 minutes

allow bread to cool on a rack, then slice and serve!

it’s a great delicious and healthier version

This is an actual example of a scenario that I've seen happen with multiple clients over the years 👍

They've gone to McDonalds, but because they are trying hard with their diet, they want to try make a 1000kcal ✅ . But it is also more than getting something like a burger + a diet coke. Or in this example a small meal 👌 . Plus the burger also has the redeeming feature of having a bit of protein, even though it certainly isn't a good way to be trying to reach protein needs 💁‍♂️ . Nobody is going to Macca's as a way of trying to be healthy. But once again, it is interesting to look at examples like this and see that sometimes you can make a significant difference by making different choices. If you get similar satisfaction from a a specific choice, but it is slightly better nutritionally, then imo it makes sense to make that choice 🙌 . Chairs were the worst for me. i can’t remember how many i broke. 😞 i would always have to gage weather i could sit on the foldable chairs. it was a tiring task to see if it was stable enough and strong

for a moment, i hope i can convey the chaos i would feel. i’d walk a 100ft and my lower back would give me shooting pain from walking. i would rush to find a seat and only find those that can’t support my weight. i often leaned on walls, sat on street curbs and laid out when no other option was available. i was incapable of living a normal life

i returned to the chair in the before picture this weekend and had a real moment of shock. grateful i can walk more now and that i don’t have to second guess a chairs capability.

easy, healthy grilled chicken margherita topped with melted mozzarella cheese, pesto, and tomato basil garnish.


serves: 4
ingredients:
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, pounded to less than 1 inch thickness
salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon italian seasoning (or ½ teaspoon dried oregano + ¼ teaspoon dried basil + ¼ teaspoon dried thyme)
4 slices mozzarella cheese

6 reasons the scale isn’t everything
▫️1) your body composition is changing: losing f*t doesn’t always mean losing weight on the scale.
▫️2) your weight fluctuates each day: first off, you shouldn’t weigh yourself everyday! monthly hormonal changes, too much sodium, water retention, can cause the scale to also not move. it’s not always accurate!
▫️3) your weight doesn’t show health👀. weight doesn’t account for things like high blood pressure, stress, how you feel, are you drinking enough water and how well are you sleeping.
▫️4) numbers on a scale aren’t a good indicator on how your clothes are fitting. loose fitting clothes is a good sign that your building lean muscle mass and dropping inches👌🏽. let how your clothes feel on you decide if your getting results. don’t forget to reward yourself with some nicer clothes for working so hard💪🏽.
▫️5) it can ruin your day! checking the number on the scale can have you feeling terrible all day if it goes up, and extra good when it goes down. limit checking to once a week or even better, once a month to keep yourself in check.
▫️6) the scale isn’t everything: health and taking care of yourself should be a lifestyle because it never stops. it’s a lifelong journey. yes, it’s nice to see results on the scale, but don’t let it be everything. enjoy what you love! you got one life.
❤️you’re not going to care in 5 years that you enjoyed your favourite fatty dish your mom made for you during christmas. enjoy that sh*t 😋!
enjoy every second of it.
the key is to get back on track and enjoy life😀👀.

🧀cheesy snack vs. cheesy snack🧀
400 calories each but take a look at these questions..

1️⃣which option would best satisfy your hunger?
2️⃣which would be the better option to get more nutrients?
3️⃣which option would you be more likely to over consume?

🧀cheesy snack 1
• 3 wholewheat crackers
• 1 ounce cheese
• 1 banana
• laughing cow cheese
• tomatoes
• hummus

or ⠀
🧀cheesy snack 2
• cheddar pringles

so which would you choose?
.....a little or a lot 💭

although it’s clear to see that in this post, i am suggesting that the first option would potentially fit someone’s daily nutritional requirements “better” than the pringles.. and leave you feeling satisfied for longer.. this is not to say that any choice is better.

both options could happily fit within a healthy lifestyle🏃🏻‍♀️🏃‍♂️
if for example, 80% of the time you are going with foods with some nutritional value, then some pringles on the weekend may be😏good for the soul❤️

it’s just about making smart choices (most of the time!)🤩

I am scared to weigh myself! .

i havnt weighed myself in 8 weeks. .

heres why: i personally dont depend on what the scale says. because one morning ill weigh 2lbs more, the next morning ill be 2lbs less. .

in my opinion the scale is more of a mind f then anything. .
.

but i also understand how mental it can be to see that number, which is why im scared to step on it. .

ive been intuitively eating lately. focusing on my protein every 3 hours and filling in with what carbs and fats i feel like. i do this in between tracking and leaning out because frankly, it can get exhuasting to track all the time. .
. i think its extremely important to track somehow whether thats an app (like my fitness pal, or my transphormation starts today app) when youre first starting out and learning what macros are in foods. but, i dont think anyone should have to do this indefinitely. .
.

tracking can give you clarification on what c**p you ate that day also. .
.
.
tracking allows you to intuativly eat with a better mondset to choose healthy nutrient dense foods better. but the body needs a break!! dont always be trying to lose fat. you should fluccuate between calorie deficit, to maintence level, to a slight surplus to keep the body geussing and healthy!! .
.

it really isnt healthy to be in a calorie deficit all year. health is way more important than looks! .
.
that being said, i know stepping on the scale, will bring a higher weight, but mentally i hate seeing that number....which is why i choose to go by how i feel, not by what a machine tells me.

Good things happen out of a caloric deficit! .

all my clients will know this. even if my client is after f*t loss as a main goal, never ever will they be in a long linear caloric deficit. .
.
this basically means calories / macros aren’t a constant category. .
.
many factors will influence how often and what will change.
.
.
chronic low f*t intake for example will lean to inability to synthesise testosterone which will then impair muscle building potential. .
.
chronic low carbohydrate intake (with regards to expenditure) will more often than not lead chronic elevated cortisol which then inhibits f*t loss. .
.
chronic low protein intake leads to muscle catabolism and impairs protein synthesis (among many other adverse consequences but this is the one that is most relevant to this post) .
.
so you should be careful about this. if you were wondering why you are plateauing - here are your answers (if the problem is nutrition related) .

The note when processing smoothies weight loss at home:
- if you prefer to drink cold, you can add ice to the blender or freeze ingredients before grinding. however, using fresh fruits and vegetables for processing is still more recommended.
- in the preparation process, the vegetables should be ground first, then the fruits. because vegetables will be harder to grind than fruit, you need to add the ingredients little by little, not all at once for the blender to work properly.
- absolutely no added sugar or sweetened milk.
- should be used immediately after processing to achieve the best effect. if not used can be kept in the refrigerator and should be used within 2 hours to avoid the components degenerated
