Harvesting #calendula flowers is a sensory experience. calendula takes about two days to fully bloom but will only do so once the sun reaches its peak. partly cloudy days simply won't do, calendula waits to unfurl its petals in greeting, exhaling a deep sigh of contentment when the sun shines on its face. and in response to this warmth, calendula releases its light, aromatic scent. while not as luxurious as the garden rose or hypnotic like chamomile, the smell of calendula has its own floral signature that immediately helps you feel safe and grounded in your solar plexus, which is coincidentally an area this herb is wonderful for. ✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
when we reach down to pick these sweet blooms we are met with two distinct sensations: the soft silkiness of the petals and the resinous stickiness around it's sepal. good calendula is very resinous... you'll notice that store bought calendula just feels like dried flowers and isn't nearly as bright as what you see here. this lets you know just how long its been sitting on the shelf! anywho, back to this sensory experience. what's left? sight, smell, feel, touch...ah, taste! to me calendula tastes like warmth, comfort, and safety. it has a slightly bitter quality to it but i see it as more aromatic. calendula lends well with teas that include other floral, grounding, cleansing, or warming herbs. here's how i am enjoying it on this extremely rainy morning:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
- 3 calendula flowers (to cultivate safety in my body)
- 1 tsp of dried ginger (to ignite the warmth within)
- 1 tsp of ashwagandha root (for resiliency and peace of mind)
- 1 tsp of cinnamon (for deeper connection to self)
- 1/2 tsp of licorice root (to remember the sweetness of life even when the rain falls down)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
add herbs to 8-10oz of hot water, steep covered for 15-20 minutes, strain, and add generous amounts of local honey. enjoy and be gentle with yourself today (and all days) 🌞 you may notice this calendula looks a little different than the usual garden variety. we grow flashback calendula from @hudsonvalleyseedco, an heirloom variety that lends well to our climate and grows in abundance year round!

Herbal infusions: the cold infusion method. 🌿🌿 today i'm infusing homegrown herbs in liquid coconut oil for later use in salves.
rose oil: skin health- moisturize, brighten, anti-aging, stretch marks, dry skin.
calendula oil: rub into wounds and burnt skin for healing, nourishing, sunburns, dry skin, soothes bug bites.
arnica oil: use on bruises, sprains and sore muscles for easy recovery. all-around healer.
rosemary oil: apply for pain relief and nasal congestion. great for mental fatigue, skin and hair care.
lavender leaf oil: soothing for bug bites, headache and stress relief. 🌿🌿 the next batch of salves and balms i make will have homegrown herbal oils as a base. all herbs (except arnica- i bought that organically) grown in my garden 🌿🌿
