I tempted fate yesterday by saying out loud that i think our house is over this weird sickness bug that we’ve being trying to shake for two weeks... i lay in bed all night feeling horribly nauseous and feeling friggin grateful that i didn’t experience morning sickness in my pregnancies and feeling total respect for the superwomen mummas who do.

so this was not filmed today, today i rested and had a bath instead of getting on my mat. it’s what i needed. it’s taken me a long time to listen to what i actually need instead of doing what i think i need and it’s progress i’m proud of. #thepowerofyoga .
so back to today’s #fridaychallenge. i saw @beachyogagirl doing these a few weeks ago and man are they good. if you grip the ball from the outside your #adductors (inner thighs) will be screaming after a couple. it also made me realise how much harder i find wide pushups as i rarely practice them!! they definitely need work!!

3 top upper body strengtheners for yogis
it’s no secret that i love yoga, and the benefits we can achieve through our practice is incredible. as with all sports and exercise forms, certain muscles get a bit more tlc than others and this is no different in yoga. inversions, sun salutations and planks (to name a few) use the muscles at the front of our body more than the back (our push muscles more than our pull muscles)! i've been working with physiotherapist @finolaphysio for the last two years to bring you @strengththroughyoga. one of our main aims through this is #injuryprevention so that you can get the most out of your yoga practice. and one reason for common injuries is muscle imbalance. in yoga, the upper back and back of the shoulder muscles aren't targeted as easily so in today’s video we've brought you our top 3 strengtheners for working this area.

adding in strengtheners like these a couple of times a week (using light hand weights, resistance bands or even bottles of water) will complement your regular yoga practice really well. try 2-3 rounds of this circuit once or twice per week. for fin’s version check out the details on her page.

mine and fin’s top tips for this circuit:
๐Ÿ›‘ move slowly with intention, exhaling into the movement, inhaling as you release.
๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿพ‍โ™€๏ธtabletop row x 10 each side
keep your core engaged in tabletop position and pull the shoulder blade in towards your spine as you life the elbow up towards the ceiling. the body should be stable as you move the arm.
๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿพ‍โ™€๏ธtricep extensions x 10 on each leg
coming into high lunge, lean forwards keeping the core engaged and spine neutral. ground down through the front foot to engage the glute and keep the legs nice and strong. squeeze your shoulder blades together as you extend your elbows keeping the palms facing in towards the side of the body.

keep the core engaged as you extend your arms above your head keeping the elbows pointed out to the sides, arms facing forwards.

first off lets start off with a lot of these exercises are going to overlap since there's a few exercise that basically hit the whole entire forearm, but i've mixed it up for the most muscle specific exercises that put greater emphasis on each section.

nothing completes your arm development like a thick, muscular forearm. but many people ignore direct forearm training.

if you want to maximize your arm development and you didn't win the genetic lottery, adding a small amount of direct forearm work to your big lifts will make a big difference.

the trick with effective forearm training is to not overdo it. if you train properly, you already indirectly work your forearms multiple times per week with plenty of mechanical tension. now, all you need to do is add a little direct metabolic stress once or twice a week to supercharge your growth.

so what i have here is the major muscle groups of your forearm, you're going to have to hit all the angles (i.e. supinated, pronated, etc...). the brachioradialis is the main muscle people think of when working their forearms but their are many muscles in the forearm we can work! .

tricep pushdown is one of the exercises that i really believe that the lighter the weight, the more effective it is.

i see a lot of people putting a lot of weight for their pushdowns, but end up using their entire body to move the weight. this won’t grow your triceps. lighten the load and feel the burn in your triceps instead.
.
how to do

face high pulley with rope or bar attachment, the attachment should be hanging at chest height. if you are using a rope grab it with clinched hands side by side, palms facing in. if you are using a bar, grab it with palms facing down.

stand up straight or tilt your body in a 30 degree angle forward for a greater range of motion.

extend your arms down until straight with only slight bent at the elbow. keep your core tight and elbows close to your body in the same position throughout the motion.

at the bottom of the movement extend your hands down and to the sided in a way that they're almost touching your thighs.

slowly return to the starting position, keep the cable a bit lowered so you'll have tension on your arms all the time. repeat.

instead of standing up straight, tilt your torso forward 30 degrees. doing pushdown while standing up straight limits your range of motion, in a way that the long head of the tricep muscle is left out, the muscle that is responsible for shoulder extension. which means, you only train part of your triceps. tilting your body will give you full range of motion, and will engage the whole three muscles consisting your triceps.

Benefits of cables - curls

when it comes to isolation exercises be it if isolation is your goal or your training functionally and you like to isolate as a finisher, cables can be great for a final pump of the bicep as they provide: a consistent weight all the way through the movement eccentrically and concentrically. it allows you to focus on the bicep only as no other body is being used as a synergist to assist. this can be a great way of breaking through strength plateaus for this particular area as well. it's important to add variation to our workouts therefore why not try the cable machine every once in a while
