When we get upset or frustrated, it is easier to react (i.e. yell, scream, swear, stonewall) instead of responding, but it takes courage and self-awareness to be able to communicate our feelings. this can be healthy and productive if done the right way, but it can also lead to more frustration if done in a less effective way. in this post, i share with you some ways to identify the differences between helpful and unhelpful ways to communicate our anger. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
how do you communicate when frustrated or angry?

We hold on to anger for many reasons that may be advantageous temporarily. for example, it validates our experience or shields us from justifying our own behavior. it is also easier than having uncomfortable conversations with others and expressing our anger toward them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
however, internalizing anger can leave us depleted and cynical. when we hold on to anger, we start to show it in other ways. we might become overly critical of others and engage in self-victimization. we may start to get irritated more quickly which results in our body going into a stress response. we might also start to feel isolated or depressed. most importantly, holding on to anger can result in misunderstandings with others which can have a debilitating effect on our relationships. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
now, this doesn’t mean that anger must be expressed aggressively through impulsive outbursts so we don’t internalize it. this can actually escalate the issue at hand and lead to more aggression. when we get angry, it is important to step back from the situation until we can think rationally and communicate our frustration effectively when appropriate or simply learn to let go of the anger.

A study done at the university of valencia (hereto et al., 2010) analyzed changes in the brain and body when we get angry. they found that anger leads to profound changes in the autonomous nervous system. our heart rate, arterial tension, and testosterone productions increase during anger. our state of mind also becomes more negative and impulsive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Anger is a tool that helps us read and respond to upsetting social situations. but how can you stop it from getting out of hand?

anger is in itself neither good nor bad—it’s what you do with it that matters.

when you’re angry, give yourself permission to pause for a moment, even if someone is standing there awaiting a response. you can even let them know that you are intentionally slowing the situation down. choose to make good decisions rather than fast ones. when you’re angry, pauses, deep breaths, and moments of reflection more effectively exercise power and control than rapid-fire responses. if you feel less angry when you slow down, great, but that’s not the goal. this is about giving yourself a wider range of options to choose from in an emotionally charged situation.

think like a chess player. before deciding on a course of action, imagine how the other person will counter and how the situation might look two moves from now. if it looks good, continue along your present path. if it looks bad, consider an alternative behaviour, imagine how they will counter that, and evaluate this scenario. keep checking in with yourself by asking, - is my anger helping or hurting the situation? 🕉 #bepyaare -

We all have our own unique ways of coping with strong emotions ( sadness, grief, anger) and for some people, that way is based on hiding from emotions and not letting the pain show.⁣

hiding our feelings has a negative physical impact as well as a mental impact.⁣

researchers found that people who are coping by avoiding their feelings, particularly by not expressing their emotions freely, have higher levels of cytokines, which are markers of inflammation in the blood.⁣

bodily inflammation is linked to many health conditions. these findings really highlight the importance of acknowledging one's emotions rather than bottling them up.⁣

while it may sometimes be tempting to ignore things that make us sad or upset, acknowledging our feelings and allowing them to flow will keep us healthier both mentally and physically. ⁣

if you were to put a percentage of how much you suppress your emotions from 0% to 100%, what percent would you give yourself? look at this number and begin to think of ways you can express your feelings. it might be by talking to a friend, art, dancing, journaling, etc. the important piece is to recognize those emotions and give them the space they need. remember, our emotions are teachers❤️. ⁣

When a current situation triggers unresolved hurt, i will react automatically and forcefully. i will experience intense emotion that pushes me to fight back through anger, to want to escape the situation, to agree to anything to avoid conflict, to want to push people away, to experience high anxiety, ...
when the impulse subsides, i experience deep feeling of guilt and shame on my automatic reactions, i feel as if i lost my power of decision and control of the situation.
either i need to repair the damage done or i choose to sever the relationship.
learning to recognize these intense bouts of emotions and what triggers them allows me to distance from automatic reactions, regaining my power of decision over my life and experiencing more fulfilling and peaceful relationships.
